Smid will obviously be back barring something drastically unexpected. He's done well this year and will hopefully look even a bit better next year. After those 3 however it gets difficult in my mind. Tjarnqvist I'm hoping will not be back, he hasn't done enough (though he has been injured) to warrant another fair-sized contract. Hejda, also a UFA, is a guy that's impressed a lot of people around here, myself included. I'd take him back at a million or so for next season. Greene's an RFA after this year If I recall correctly and it's not ridiculous to think he could be dealt for an upgrade, though not likely. Gilbert has impressed me in his limited time this year and I'd like to see him on the third pair next year fulltime. We also have Roy and Syvret waiting, I'm not sure if Roy has a oneway deal but if he does that could create more havoc and would pretty much have to result in a trade. We also have Grebeshkov after the Bergeron deal.

Smith, Staios, Smid, Tjarnqvist, Hejda, Greene, Gilbert, Grebeshkov, Roy... That's 9 defencemen with a decent chance at a top 6 spot. Add in the fact that pretty much everyone is pleaing for a top pairing DMan to be signed a la Timonen/Markov and moves will need to be made.

What I'd like to see (realistically):

Smith-UFA (Stuart/Markov/Timonen)
Staios-Smid
Greene/Gilbert/Hejda
Except where's Greeby? He's on a 1-way deal so I don't see him being sent down.

Heres my dream for next years d-core

Rafalski-Smith
Salo-Smid
Staios-Grebs/Gilbert/Greene

but that would cost too much money, but crap I think that would be solid.

I am not even going to venture a guess. The d-corps should have at least 2 new faces on it - both of which should be top 4 minute players. These two do not include Denis Grebeshkov, although as a bottom pair guy worth a look. I am hoping a reunited Smith-Staios pairing highlites the middle pairing of a more solid corps. To me if

? - ?
Staios - Smith
Smid - Greene

Gilbert

Can be put together I would be happy. Not sure who is available for the top 2 d spots but hoping something like Phillips - Rafalski ish.

I'd like the Oilers to sign any 2 of these guys in the off-season, but as I said above, its probably a pipe dream

Brian Rafalski
Tom Preissing
Chris Phillips
Kimmo Timonen
Andrei Markov
Brad Stuart
Roman Hamrlik
Sheldon Souray
Scott Hannan
Eric Brewer
Sami Salo

I'm not sure what to think about him... I'm assuming Smith and Staios will be there next year, Smid will obviously be there, Greene in all likelihood will be, I've loved Gilbert's play the few times I've seen him, Hejda based on his strong play in tough minutes all year and being a K Lowe find I expect will be resigned and most are hoping for a UFA signing in the mould of a Timonen/Rafalski. We have too many young NHL 3rd pairing ready defencemen and not enough top 4 guys... The offseason and maybe even the deadline will be interesting at the very least because Smid, Greene, Grebs, Gilbert are all under 25 (off the top of my head) and all are NHL ready but probably not for big roles

The only ones outta that group Kevin Lowe would have any remote chance of signing would be either Chris Phillips or Eric Brewer, and even then it's highly unlikely. No chance to any of the rest and no thanks to Souray.

I'm guessing our D will look like this at the beginning of next year:

UFA Signing (Markov/Timonen/Phillips)- Smith
Staios - Smid
Hejda - Greene

Gilbert and Grebeshkov fighting for the 7th d-man job.

- I don't think Roy fits into our long term plans I'm guessing we might keep him as depth d for awhile, but I think it's just a matter of time before we trade him.
- Syvret still needs more seasoning.

If I was a betting man....our top d-man that we land this summer will be a true #1, and it won't be a free agent pickup. Now, have any of you been paying attention to my posts as to who I'm talking about??? I also think Lowe will bring Brewer back in addition.

Hedja is a FA but he has clearly earned a spot in the top 6 next season. He has arguably been their best D man in the last 30 or so games.

Smid
Hedja
Staios
Greene
Smith
Grebeshkov

These are the top 6 I see going into next season so I'd assume Smith and possibly Greene will be moved before next season. Though I think neither of them move until draft day or sometime during the off season. This would also leave them with Gilbert and Roy as your possible 6, 7 or 8 guys if they bring in a horse to go with the guys listed above, minus Smith and perhaps Greene.

I agree with the Philips comment, I can see him making his way over here next season. If Ottawa signs him then we go after Preissing and add a different defensive specialist.

Ideally we add an offensive guy that is good defensively - Timonen and a defensive guy that can still make a decent first pass - Philips. But that is a lot of money between them.
