Best old guys in the NHL

I thought since there have been so many "best young _____ in the NHL" I should make this one as well.

Who are the best old (35 or older) players in the NHL?

No mention of Scott Stevens? The guy broke up a 3 on 1 the other night to allow the Devils to comeback and beat Ottawa late in the 3rd period. He screws up that play and Hossa probably makes it a 2 goal lead. Tonight he dives to breakup another key Isles rush.

I have to give credit where credit is due - a tip of the hat to Igor Larionov...he may not be the best player out there right now, but I gotta give him credit for longevity.

Iggy, I miss you...

The no-brainers have to be Lemieux, Francis, Stevens, Yzerman, Hull, Hasek, Belfore, Messier, and Oates.

Hull & Messier tops on my list, no other 'old man' has done more this season. The 'moose' especially because so many considered him toast!

Nobody has any love for Steve Thomas? He's the guy that sparked the Red Wings hot streak the past 12 or so games.

Scott Stevens, hands down. He remains among the top 10-15 dmen in the game, period.

Haha, I was just going to say that. Thomas has been amazing for the Wings. Yzerman and Hull have also been amazing in Detroit this season.

I'd say Stevens is a top 5 dman right now (regular season)

During playoff time, I'd say he's the best in the business.

Gary Roberts deserves some consideration too. Guys like Stevens are Roberts continue to play physical at old age. That's what's most impressive. They've been doing it for 20 years.

Joe Nieuwendyk is well worthy of a mentioning in a thread like this. Leafs fans are going to really really love this guy.

Very true about the physical play of Roberts and Stevens.

Only reason I didn't put Stevens in a definitive top 10 D spot was to avoid starting some inane debate of everyone's top 10. It really is very cool (and rare) to watch when a player is still on top of his game in his final years.

Scott Stevens and Al McInnis are both amazing athletes. Hull also deserves a mention.

wow, a point per game while surrounded by kids iis ineffective? Crazy.
(ok, slight exaggeration, he's a point shy of being a point per game)

And back on topic, for a playoff run, there isn't a skater in the NHL I'd rather add to my team than Stevens.

Although he's not as good as the aformentioned players, Scott Mellanby is up there in age & a decent first liner still.

Stevens and Hull have earned all-star trips despite their age (not just an invite from Bettman, a real invite)
Yzerman and Thomas have also been good.

The Detroit Red Wings....

Seriously, guys like Hull, Stevie Y, Shanny, Stumpy, CHelios, they just keep on going. It shows you that experience will get you a long way in this league.

And of course, guys like Scott Stevens and Ron Francis and other vets are great too...

Chelios doesn't deserve to be mentioned on that list. He is a dirty hack and a whiner.
