1. Salary - Berard's contract is only $2.5 mill...which means we'll owe him less than $1 mill for rest of this season.
2. History - Berard started his career with the New York Islanders. I think that would give him some extra motivation for when we play the Islanders 4 more times this season.
3. Berard's play - Sure, he is not great on defense. Yet, if used properly, he can help us. We can use him as a powerplay specialist who will play mostly the powerplay...while maybe playing 5-10 minutes 5 on 5 on our 3rd D pairing.
I would take a chance on him. We can get him off waivers without giving up anyone, which is nice. If he ends up playing like Ozolinsh, then we simply sit him.

Is he a UFA at the end of the season, if so I might take a chance on him.
Hey singing or Foresburg could you change the title of this thread to "Players on waivers" because there is a whole slew of players that have been put on waivers and I did not want to start a new thread.
The Following Players are on Waivers:
Brian Boucher, Bryan Berard, Michael Leighton, Denis Hamel, Jason Krog, Niko Kapanen, Marc Chouinard, Aaron Downey, and Petr Cajanek
Cajanek is intriguing. Might make Nylander expendable for the balance of the season.
Problem with waiver claims for a team that's going to miss that playoffs is that they eliminate an opportunity for some Wolfpackers to get a quick cameo. I'll be really disappointed if the Rangers squander an opportunity to see what some of these players might offer for next year.
As far As Beread goes, Thanks, but no, Been there done that. Glad hes been able to play again. But I dont want anymore over the hill Vets. I want younger & hungrier.
I think he's a UFA at season's end as well. Maybe not a bad idea to take a chance on him.
yep, he is a decent playmaking center...if Straka is out long-term, then Cajanek would be a good pickup for sure!
I say we should pickup both Cajanek and Berard. We have 2 forwards hurt so Cajanek would be nice to help with that. Berard could be a decent power-play specialist.

There has to be someone better out there, so I would pass. Respectfully ofcourse.
Someone better for free? I don't think so.
When you consider it's a sellers market and there are barely any good defenseman available, it's obviously going to cost too much to trade for one. Sather and Maloney aren't going to give up youth to improve the blue line.
With that said, the only way we get the offensive dman we've needed all season is to take a chance on a guy like Berard.
And if he sucks so what. He's gone after the season.
Bring him in and trade Ward. That makes our blue line better today and opens up a spot next year for Staal/Pock.
Cajanek is Def Entriguing. But with another year on that contract, id have to say no. Not suprised at all with Krog being put on the Waivers.
Oh and to the Original Poster...No thanks with Berard. We've had him once already. I like seeing Girardi and Pock actually getting some playing time, instead of sitting in the Box.
lol well looks like if he is not claimed (which I do not think he will be) he will more than likely sent to Hartford. He put up really good numbers in the AHL in his career and should give Hartford some veteran leadership for their playoff run.

If we do pick up Cajanek, what we can do next season is keep Cajanek and trade Nylander. Nylander could bring in some good picks or prospects. Cajanek would be a much cheaper and younger replacement. Nylander is 35...Cajanek is 32.
It will also allow us to give guys like Dubinsky a shot at playing center on the 1st line.

i like how cajanek is a viable replacement for nylander.. the guy's never scored more than 41 points in his career
