Summary :

says he thought there was a chance of getting it done right up till 20min to the deadline.

-reiterated that Edm told him if a deal wasn't done last summer then they wouldn't talk to Meehan again till this summer. Negotiations started a month and a half ago.

-- important issues came up late, they ran out of time. no trade and no move clauses were a part of that.

-- On smyth returning : Never shutting any doors.
Sounds like Smyth will definitely wait till July 1st. Meehan will encourage him to keep Edm an option. Says the Oilers will have to be at the table like all the other teams.

--says it wouldn't be fair to put a dollar amount on how far apart they were cause there were some other things as well.

Caught that as well. I think that would very well be a big part of all this seeing as to how the Oilers do not give out no trade/movement clauses.

I've heard this before too. What is the logic of this? No-trade clauses can be a handicap, yes, but they've also become something of a joke—they're routinely waived. All they usually do for players is ensure that they're not traded into bad situations.

...severely limiting any possible return for said players....
