after last night's loss

to Pens, I have to admit that I think our chances of making the playoffs are fading fast.

Pens are a good team and we played better (harder) than we have been prior to trade deadline, bubt we still came up short.

I'm predicting we come up short by 2-3 points in the end.

Hope I'm wrong.

Actually it was the longest unbeaten streak and winless streak, because there were ties way back then.

And interestingly there was a tie game between the two streaks that was part of both streaks.

07. NY Islanders - 73 (18)
08. Montreal - 72 (16)
------------------------
09. Carolina - 71 (16)
10. Toronto - 67 (19)
11. NY Rangers - 67 (18)

Look at the standings.
We're tied with Toronto (yes they have on game in hand which they play tonight) with one more game against them (2 points) so we're even with them as of now.

We're 4 down on Carolina with 2 games (4 points) in hand (3 (6 points) after tonight) with one game left against them (2 points) that's a potential of making up 8 points.

5 down on Montreal which we have 2 games (4 points) in hand (3 (6 points) after tonight). We still have to play Montreal 2 more times (4 points). A potential to make up 10 points.

We are 6 points down on the Islanders with 4 more games against them (8 points)

If the Rangers keep pace with the Islanders and win all 4 remaining games we got this. Whoever thinks that we're done is so so so wrong.

Shanny said earlier on in the season that he thinks the playoffs will come down to the last few games, boy was he right.

Not saying

that we are out of it already.

I just think that based on recent history, we will fall short.

Here is a likely Rangers scenario: Come out flat and lose to St. Louis tomorrow in regulation and get 0 points. Then play 2 hard-fought, playoff-like games against the Icelanders, where we lose one in regulation and the other in OT/SO, getting just one measly point in 3 games.

Then you can stick a fork in.

if we miss the playoffs by a few points it's going to hurt...with the amount of games we just gave away with dumb mistakes, lazyness ect ect

...but you know it's going to happen...it'll be an emotional roller coaster the next 20 games and then they will come up 3-4 points short....

hopefully today's come from behind effort is something that they can build on. time for a huge home and home with the Isles. 2 Wins would be huge! That would put us within a hair of the 8th spot.

thats a lot of overtime (kinda unrealistic)...9-5-3 is very possible though and i personally feel that with all the games in hand both the islanders and rangers will end up in

Well they've gone 5-3-2 over the last 10...so that is on pace better than the 10-6-1 needed. Time to close out the home stand with a W.

Sports Illustrated's take on the Rangers playoff chances/chase (March 2nd):

Quote:
It's been nine seasons since the Rangers last won a playoff game. Chances are they're about to make it a nice even 10.

For a number of reasons, this season's team is a disappointing follow-up to last year's 100-point squad. Henrik Lundqvist, who carried the 2005-06 team for long stretches, has struggled with consistency. The Blueshirts have failed to make hay at home, winning just 13 games at MSG. But feel free to point the first finger at Jaromir Jagr (right).

It's tough for the rest of the team to stay cohesive, let alone motivated, when success seems to matter so little to the man wearing the C. How many shootouts has Jagr begged out of? How many times has his indifferent play cost the team valuable points? Little wonder he was quietly shopped before the deadline.

The Rangers have four games left against the Islanders and a pair against the Habs. They may need to win five of those to keep their hopes alive.

ISLES TRADED RICK?!?
i think we can expect several OT games with both teams fighting for thier lives, i see the isles getting more points teh rangers though. rick is palying well for us and our team is MUCH improved. my prediction for isles vs ranger is W L L(ot) W. i dont see eitehr team going 4-0, but i see the isles getting more points by virtue opf having the better team at this point (hard to argue, we have 2 30 goal scorers, a healthy yash comin back, a possessed hunter and just solid 4 lines)
I do hope the rangers make teh playoffs, just not at the isles expense. rags vs. isles series would be awsome.

UPDATE
My predictions versus results so far are actually getting more encouraging:

Rangers
Mar 1 PIT Prediction: WIN Result OTL: –1 point
Mar 3 STL Prediction: WIN Result WIN - 0 points

Montreal:
Mar 2 @BUF Prediction: LOSS Result Loss 0 points

Feb 28 @OTT Prediction: LOSS Result Loss 0 points
Mar 2 PIT Prediction: LOSS Result Win: + 2 points

Toronto
Mar 2 @NJ Prediction: LOSS Result Win + 2 points
Mar 3 BUF Prediction: WIN Result Loss -2 points

The standings are really tightening up. Maybe Boston will surprise all & squeeze in? Have an easier schedule than most.
Standings now:

6. Atlanta 1 game in hand 67 GP 78 points
7. N.Y. Isles 3 games in hand 65 GP 75 points
8. Carolina 0 games in hand 68 GP 73 points

You know this team is not going to just lie down and die. That would be too easy on us.

We are going to be tortured with noble games against better teams, and mediocre performances against weak teams.

If we remain with the thesis that Buffalo /65 GP 90 P/, New Jersey/67 GP 88 P/, Pittsburgh /66 GP 81 P/, Ottawa /67 GP 82 P/, Tampa Bay /68 GP 78 P/, New York Isles /66 GP 76 P/ and Atlanta /68 GP - 80 P/ all qualify (and that Boston /66 GP 69 P/ or Florida /67 GP 67 P/ do not come up very big in the end) - that leaves just one spot in reality up for grabbs.

Remaining predictions for these 4 teams are posted below:

New York Rangers
Trend last 15 games: 7 W - 5 L - 3 OTL
Ok trend. Need to be on top of the lousy teams and play 500 against the better competing teams. Lots of injuries could spoil (or actually spur) this????
Mar 8 @NYI OTL
Mar 10 @PIT LOSS
Mar 11 CAR Must WIN

Total 41 - 33 - 8
90 points

Carolina Hurricanes
Trend last 15 games: 7 W - 7 L - 1 OTL
Playing about .500 now. Are a real negative surprise. Maybe they have a hidden extra gear the last 14 games? Are under heavy pressure with more played games.
Mar 9 @WAS WIN
Mar 11 @NYR LOSS
Mar 13 FLA WIN

89 points

Finally to
Toronto Maple Leafs
Trend last 15 games: 7 W - 5 L - 3 OTL
Have an easier schedule - at least on paper. Return of Tucker could spark Leafs. Very uneven and big uncertainty in net. Still possibly biggest potential threat?

Mar 8 @OTT LOSS

Total 39 - 33 - 10
88 points

Montreal Canadiens
Trend last 15 games: 4 W - 10 L - 1 OTL
Sinking like a ship lately. No real additions or positive news and really miss Huet in net. Can they turn it around despite no deals at trade deadline? A win streak seems eminent - but maybe next year? Dark horse imo
Mar 8 @ATL LOSS

It will certainly be interesting to follow!!!
