I'll wait till a NA source picks this up. I'm not saying it isn't likely, but I don't trust a word out of the Russia media or the RSL on this issue. They've lied from the start and still are.

*yawn*

The Russian press hasn't gotten a single thing right in this saga so far.

I'll refer back to the good point the MacLean made the other day. If they say he is deserting his army commitments, then why is it the Russian Hockey League head presenting the documents and not a high ranking army official.

Zherdev - more news

From Espn: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=1681517

"A source told ESPN.com that Zherdev was using his day off to contemplate his future -- to either stay in Columbus or return to Russia -- and that he will make a decision by Tuesday or Wednesday. The Blue Jackets likely support his decision either way."

Here's what the Columbus Dispatch is reporting in this morning's edition, a different story than what is being told in the Russian newspapers:

Surprise at the difference?

If is not allowed to play for the Jackets the rest of the season, playing him in Syracuse is the best option.

An interesting point in that article was that CSKA gave him 10 days to return or officially be a deserter.

Can you imagine if someone went AWOL from the US military, traveled to Russian and got a job as a professional athlete? I know the cultures are different, but the simple fact that the military is a government entity and a sports coach is able to state publically what the terms of his desertion are??? Ridiculous.

Here is a good opinion piece I found on www.russianprospects.com about Zherdev. The guy is right - the media blew the lid of this thing without researching the issues and ignoring the hypocracy of Russian hockey. The name of article is fitting: Nikolai Zherdev: Russian Media's Whipping Boy!

Will Zherdev want to play in Siracusa? He'll runaway again, this time to the WJC in Finland

Thank you for that link, Soyuz. I've read a lot of opinion on this and the writer of this piece impressed me with his comments.

Perhaps CSKA and the Russian Federation should invest in the product below to make sure their prospects don't flee to North America until they feel they are ready to do so:

I think hed rather play in Syracuse then play 5th Line at CSKA or spend time in a Labor Camp in Siberia.

Are you joking or really that dumb but since I don't see any smiley...

Zherdev was playing for CSKA-2 just 1 game of 22 (or so) games right after minor injury. Now with Victor Tikhonov back from the hospital I am pretty sure that Zherdev would be receiving more ice time because the head coach tends to trust the youth (while Victor Tikhonov was in the hopital 2nd coach (his son Vasiliy Tikhonov) was coaching CSKA and was limiting Zherdev ice time).

Just goes to show that some parents will do anything to keep their kids away from Michael Jackson.

Actually, Finland would hold their own. Largest army in the world per capita, and they have been waiting sixty years for the Russians to try it again.

So far, what's your impression of Zherdev??

O.K. Jacket fans,I know it's early and I know Nik's been the topic of debate right now,but I haven't seen him yet so I need to know(LOL).......What's your impression?? Does he look to be the dominant offensive force that he was heralded to be when he came out?? I know it's super early, but so far, what do you think??

I dont know about "dominant force" just yet, but he has looked good. I didnt get to see the Colorado game (thank god) but I did see the other two. The first game vs Anaheim you could see his talent break out every once in a while, but his nerves and lack of sleep caught up with him. His second game, against Nashville, he was our best player on the ice IMO. Should have had 3 points. (They have to change that net rule)

Im going to the game tonight so I'll get to see him in person for the first time. I'll let you know how he looks tonight against a great team.

Overall, so far he is worth fighting Russia over.
