No Love For Montreal?

First off I am new here so if this has been asked before please excuse me. What I was wondering if there is a concious effort by players to stay away from Montreal.

What I mean is why does it seem that the Habs never pick up that star free agent and are always quiet when it comes to deadline day. Are players shying away from Montreal for some reason? I can recall the Habs being in on the Shannahan talks and noticed their name mixed in with a few other teams in the race to land Guerin. In the end they ended up with neither. Does it have something to do with the media presence in Montreal? The taxes? Or the language issue? Other circumstances?

Also, what other, if any, players has Montreal been rumored to be interested in only to see said player end up somewhere else? Thanks in advance for your insight.

UFAs that sign here:
- Dandenault
- Kovalev
- Samsonov
- Huet

Wanted to join:
- Dumont
- Dandenault
- ?

There are 30 teams in the NHL. If management shows it wants to build a team, then the UFAs will come even faster. Think for one minute for a Quebecer if he wish to play for the Habs or for a Tennessee team.

Language? Why would a Swede, a Finnish or a Russian care about the language?

The Americans on the Habs (Higgins and Komisarek) are glad to be here. Don't they matter?

I don't think it can be used as an excuse. Edmonton is just as undesireable and they still manage to get UFAs.

What i want to know.
Did any UFA's signed after July 1st last summer, make that much of a positive difference to there team overall?

I'm having trouble thinking of any.

You are right. I can only think of five names: Pronger, Savard, Chara, Hasek and Rolosson... and only two will participate to the spring tournament (if healty).

Pronger wasn't UFA he was traded to edmonton for eric Brewer not sure who else was involved in the trade.

I'm not sure Roloson every actually became UFA either.

Taxes ; main reason
Language ; ? you can live in Montreal for years without saying a word in french .

Medias ; second main reason . They are crazy , but finally it's because the fans . The ones on that board are the worst ones ; we spend hours just to talk about it . Imagine what would be our life , if the medias would stop too talk about hockey ...

Weather ; true but probably not that much .

True.

I mean the last census report in Montreal was something like 54% of people speaking English/Others languages and 46% french.

The language issue is non-existent.

The taxes - True, then again when they are riche comme Crésus so the 5-10% additional is nothing to write home about.

Wheater- We have one of the best summer in the entire North America, what do you want more ? I guess some people don't like the snow but hey, the sport is hockey... Ice Hockey, I guess they all enjoy to play hockey outside when they was young and a lot of player are from Ontario and Quebec, both province with a lot of snow.

Does Bill 101 apply to private schools? I can understand American players not wanting to play here if they have kids.

Anyway. It is easy for us to say things like "the weather isn't that bad" or "the taxes aren't that high". I find a lot of Habs fan start with the assumption that players should want to come here and should be willing to sacrifice money/lifestyle to do so. After Shannahan went to New York there was a lot of complaining that he could of sucked it up and flown to Boston when his wife wanted to see her family.

Well no one owes Montreal anything. Some players may like the team's history, some might not care. That's life.

I may be wrong, but didn't Pronger get traded to Edm as a UFA, and then sign a long-term contract with the team that summer?

montreal undesireable?
how many of you are actually from montreal or have ever visited here?
montreal is a world class cosmopolitan city. sure it has the language issues -
(not so much in montreal), and yes winter (welcome to canada, where one needs
snow and cold to make ice)...
but this a great place, with adoring fans, world class restaurants and festivals..
in a city of 3+ million people, with a team that has 100 year old history that predates the NHL.

obviously quebec has the tax issues, and that is a major, major part of it...
as these guys see all their earning power measured in the limited number of years they play pro, thus they want to maximize their returns.

To answer that question I would think that you would have to put yourself in an UFAs shoes.
Here I am 27 years old and able to play wherever I want for whatever someone will pay me. Another thing is who I think might bring me the cup or who is playing on the team I choose. Also what I want or where I want my family to finally settle down, since this could be my last permanent stop.
For me to watch a good player leave the organization I love to cheer for just so he can have these things in life is really hard to comprehend.
Unless you put yourself in their shoes.
