Overview:
It's the start of five straight home games for the Wings. Defenseman Brett Lebda missed practice with the flu. Forward Tomas Kopecky, who remains out with a broken collarbone, skated with the team Thursday. Brett Lebda wasn't at practice but should be ready for tonight's game. Babcock said he'll keep Kyle Calder with Robert Lang and Johan Franzen . Jiri Hudler likely will skate with Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper. That'll leave Josh Langfeld with Matt Hussey and Matt Ellis. The Wings had a deal in place with the Coyotes to acquire Owen Nolan , but Nolan declined the trade because his wife is pregnant and he didn't want to leave Phoenix.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade Center:

The Todd Bertuzzi Trade:

To Detroit: Todd Bertuzzi
To Florida: Shawn Matthias + Two conditional draft picks

Todd Bertuzzi (Detroit Red Wings):

DOB: Feb 2, 1975
Age: 32
Place of Birth: Sudbury, Ont., Canada
HT: 6-3 WT: 245
Shoots: L
NHL Seasons: 10
Drafted by NY Islanders in 1993 (1/23)
Assets: Big and mobile, he owns soft hands that do damage around the net. Can score spectacular goals, but is also adept at playing the set-up role. When on his game, he can dominate.
Flaws:
His temper often gets the best of him. Lacks discipline and takes a lot of bad penalties in the offensive zone. Can get lazy at times.
Career: potential Power forward.
Personal: Bertuzzi has a wife, Julie, a son named Tag, and a daughter named Jaden

Shawn Matthias (Florida Panters):

Scout Comments:
"He's got real good size and he's got good speed. He gets on pucks fast and he has that big body. We're hoping he's a third-liner. He’s a strong skater, and in the new NHL, we’re hoping he’s going to be a real tough guy to play against.” Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill (June 2006)
Strenghts:
Excellent size for a young prospect, swift skater who has good speed, forechecks with gusto, finishes checks, plays a simple north-south game, smart at both ends of the rink, good playmaker, great penalty-killer, hard worker, known to drop the gloves on occasion, good on faceoffs, great dedication to off-ice fitness and strength training
Weaknesses:
More confidence and assertiveness would allow him make a huge impact, not a punishing physical force for his size, may not have the hands to become a top-line NHLer
Projection:
Matthias projects as a third- or fourth-line role player in the future.

The Kyle Calder Trade:

To Philadelphia Flyers: Lasse Kukkonen + 3rd Draft pick 2007 (From Chicago)
To Chicago: Jason Willimas (From Detroit)
To Detroit: Kyle Calder (From Philadelphia)

Kyle Calder (Detroit Red Wings):

DOB: Jan 5, 1979
Age: 28
Place of Birth: Mannville, Alta., Canada
HT: 5-11 WT: 176
Shoots: L
NHL Seasons: 6
Drafted by Chicago in 1997 (5/130)
Assets: Provides his team with a bundle of energy every shift. Has a propensity to step it up in key situations. Can play effectively at any forward position. Is developing his offensive game.
Flaws: Needs to bulk up in order to survive playing an in-your-face style at the NHL level. May have already topped out his offensive production.
Career: potential Top six winger.

Lasse Kukkonen (Philadelphia Flyers):

DOB: Sep 18, 1981
Age: 25
Place of Birth: Oulu, Finland
HT: 6-0 WT: 187
Shoots: L
NHL Seasons: 1
Drafted by Chicago in 2003 (5/151).
Assets: Plays an all-around game. Moves the puck well and is very disciplined in the defensive zone.
Flaws: His lack of size could hurt his chances of playing regularly in the NHL. Doesn't have top-end offensive skills.
Career potential: Top six defenseman.

Jason Willams (Chicago BlackHawks):

DOB: Aug 11, 1980
Age: 26
Place of Birth: London, Ont., Canada
HT: 5-11 WT: 185
Shoots: R
NHL Seasons: 5
Signed by Detroit in 2000
Assets: Is offensively gifted and savvy. Can put up solid numbers and works well with talented linemates. Is very useful on the power play, and can even play the point.
Flaws: Lacks size and supreme skating ability. Must play a grittier game in order to remain a successful top-six forward.
Career: potential Top six winger.

Ailing Hasek, Chelios out

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/weblog...03.html#241803

Quote:
Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek will sit out tonight's game, and possibly Sunday's as well, with a sore thigh. Chris Osgood will start in his place and Jmmy Howard, recalled from Grand Rapids, will be the back-up.

Chris Chelios will also miss the game due to a sore groin. Coach Mike Babcock said neither injury is significant.

Brett Lebda, who missed practice Thursday because of the flu, will play tonight.
Doesn't sound to serious! Let's not overreacted like on the main forum!

Aaaaach! The first Wings game I get to watch in a long time and everyone is sick or injured!

Hopefully, they can still pull out the victory against the Hawks.

Cheese and rice...the Hawks are more healthy than the Wings are right now. With this 5 games homestand coming up and only one of those teams is in the playoffs right now...can't give away two points right now no matter how banged up you are. Ozzie has played well this year...I don't think there's a huge drop-off from Hasek. I expect no fewer than 7 points on this homestand.

Wings 4 (Calder, Holmstrom, Filppula, Schneider)
Hawks 2 (Havlat, Sharp)

Hello, troops....I was sweating if I would make it or not (ice storm and power outages), but I did.

Glad to see Pasha with the A again. I hear this was the consensus vote of his teammates? If so, it's a nice honor.

Nine days til I see the guys in person! I'm getting anxious!

GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!

Ugh, that wiff by Langfeld was awful. Is he trying to show Williams that Detroit doesn't miss him?

I think the Hawks would have to request a challenge and have ref measure the hue.

I feel bad for Ellis. A quick whistle kept him from his first NHL goal.

sharp as hell.
first i heard they'd go w/ white next year for all home teams... then i heard they'll stick w/ dark... then i heard it was brought up for discussion again. who knows...
whites = crisp, clean, sharp = home team. i like seeing the darks of visitors anyway, it's nice to see the greens, oranges, navies, etc, of the world.
