Ryan Smyth – Conspiracy Theory

What if Ryan Smyth was prepared to sign here for less money but was not ‘allowed’ to by the NHLPA. If he signs for less then it brings down averages all over the place, not good for the NHLPA…

Do they have this kind of power?

They couldn't force him to sign for more. They could ask him, and tell him it was better for the players not too, but there is no way they could force him to take a higher salary.

It'd be better for the NHLPA, actually.

Every extra dollar Ryan Smyth gets on his contract is coming out of someone else's contract at this point.

There were rumblings of the exact same thing when Ray Bourque would sign for less to stay in Boston. The NHLPA wasnt at all happy and it was said in future contract negotiations that the other teams in the league would use the "Ray Bourque only makes this much so do you think you are worth more than him."
There is probably pressure for the players to hold out for the maximum dollars they can get by the agents and the NHLPA but in the end the player has the final say as to what he will accept.
