Today on the the Team 1200 Jacques said that Volchenkov will be out several months because he's undergoing shoulder surgery next week. Not good news at all.
Does this change any trade plans especially the defense?

I don't think so...just removes the headache of carrying 8 dman...now we only have 7.

It doesn't change any of the team's plans. It may change the plans of some fans who were busy dreaming up trades involving the Sens D for forwards.
Do you really think he was that out of shape this season so far?
He did show up to training camp out of shape, again.
Being in better shape would not only make him a better player, but it would improve his durability as well.

True enough...
Maybe we should start calling him "McAnton" soon ???
Are you saying there is no correlation between being in shape and staying healthy?
Anybody can sustain injuries, being fit doesn't make you superhuman of course.
I don't think Anton will ever make the next level unless he puts more effort into off-ice workouts. You look at a guy like Stevens, whom Anton is often compared to, and he is one of the most fit players in the league. Anton is far from it, he might be the worst on the Sens team. Doesn't make him a bad player, but he can be better.
I don't know how bad this is. These things are realy painful and can take time to heal properly, depending on the gravity.
I figure Anton may not be back until March, where they will try to give him some games to get his timing back before the playoffs in April. I haven't seen any projections for his return but you don't want to hurry him back considering his style of play to be effective. We'll have to think positive and look at his return as acquiring someone new at the trade deadline. But i'd say he's effectively gone for the remaining bulk of the regular season....

Kind of like when Magnus hit an open door and was lost for about 40 games.
I agree wholeheartedly Volchenkov needs to improve his conditioning. I am all for guys having big builds like Hossa or to a lesser extent Rachunek, but Volchenkov is still close to 230 pounds and that's not just a big build. I'm dissapointed that he didn't do more this off-season, but that will come.
Oh well, nobody is going to convince me the loss of a sophomore D is going to kill the Sens in the playoffs, but this still hurts.
Maybe we should start looking at acquiring D at the trade deadline instead of that LW powerforward everyone is clamoring for?
I think that would be nice, to get a physical defenceman for the third pairing. If the Sabres are shopping Jay McKee, I'd love to get him to solidify a third pairing, but he'd be damn expensive for a third pairing guy.
If the Stars are dumping players, Richard Matvichuk is another guy I'd consider. Matvichuk for example is close to being a UFA, and is hardly a guy who commands top minutes or has major trade value.
Yeah, but I prefer these more realistic proposals than the ones looking for ringers. I like that; a physical defenceman for the third pairing; I'd add mobile for a perfect fit with the Sens. This trade is more in the realm of possibilities.
For possible trade partners, first I'd look at teams at the bottom end of their conference, starting in the West then going East. Of course the Buffalo connection is always there with Muckler.
I'd have to agree with those advocating more depth at D. I'm sure the sherrif could probably handle the minutes, but I'd be happier giving up a 2nd, 3rd or a prospect.

Couple of other guys to consider:
Keith Carney, Wesley, Boughner and Rathje.
All 4 are UFAs.
I wouldn't do Boughner. IMO, he isn't much of an improvment on Hnidy.
Carney is interesting, and I like him a lot, but I doubt Anaheim deals him. They'll turn it around.
Wesley, wow, that'd be interesting. If you ask me, he's not the type of blueliner I think we need. He's too much of a Leschyshyn type.
Finally, Rathje's price tag would be a tad too high. SJ like Anaheim is turnign it around and I bet they'd ask for Bonk in a deal for Rathje.
Bare in mind that Rathje would becoming a UFA - of course if the sharks are in the hunt then it might be a case of no dice. I would hope that somehting like a conditional pick (1st if SC final, 2nd otherwise) would be enough to get it done.

I didn't realize that.
It would be interesting. Defenitely would make us much bigger. A top 5 of Redden, Rachunek, Chara, Phillips and Rathje gives us about an average heigh of 6'5 and weight of around 225. I like it.
