Mara

How do you like Mara so far, after a couple of games with NYR ? Is he comfortable in his new role ? Whater, tell me what you think about him and the trade...

Big upgrade over Ward, I hope he gets some significant power play time because he's got a blast back there, gets it on or near the net, and can put up some points.

I liked Ward, but Boston really hosed themselves in this trade if you ask me. Mara is younger, makes a similar salary, is more mobile, and plays more of a well-rounded game than Ward, who is strictly a defensive guy - a good one, at that - with almost no offensive ability whatsoever.

So far so good. Hard to tell just yet but seems steady. Hasn't made any costly errors which is always a good thing. I like his shot from the point and I like that he doesn't hesitate to use it.

Mara had a HUGE primary assist yesterday on the Rangers first goal that sparked the late-game come back. I think it was on the PP as well. He logged a solid 20 minutes as well. I think this was a steal of a trade by Satherony.

I do like that he's not afraid to shoot the puck...and from what I've seen he puts it on net too. Hopefully he'll give us some much needed scoring from the blue line.

too small a sample size. a few times he got caught pinching but he was backed up well on the play.

All I can't say is I don't think he's cost us a goal yet, so that's a good thing. I still miss Ward, but Mara has a good shot. Need to see him some more.

I thought he made some nice defensive plays against Crosby the other day too.

Didn't see the Pittsburg game, but I didn't notice him a lot against the Blues. That can be good and bad...

The assist on Rachunek's goal was a pretty nice play though. Drew the defenders over and gave Rachunek room to move in and shoot

Mara is doing good for us, for now. Too early to tell though.

I agree, too small a sample size. And I just heard on the radio a few minutes ago that Aaron Ward scored his first goal as a Bruin. Against the Devils.

The key is...

how he'll be used. Mara needs to get significant PP time and play with a defensive defenseman (Ward would've been a decent partner for him, interestingly enough). Unfortunately, I don't see him getting the PP time, and I think that'll affect him, but we'll see.

Insofar as the trade...I'm still up in the air. Not sure if I care much about the age because Ward didn't play like he was old and I believe Mara will be UFA at the end of next season, just like Ward, so age may be meaningless. Further, I think the Rangers needed to get stronger on defense, and they did not. Also, Ward had intangibles Mara does not, but the speculation is that those intangibles may've gotten him moved, if you believe the speculation. So who knows. I'm not jumping up and down either way.

I really like the trade but I will admit I didn't care for Ward. It seems everytime I turned on a game within minutes Ward would be going to the penalty box. Saying that I do think we over used him and that he could be a very solid 5th type dman. As for Mara, great heavy shot, good size and skating, and a fresh start. He may just fill the PP need we have lacked.

I like what I have seen of Mara thus far, its only been what 2 or 3 games, but he has a nice shot that I would like to see him use it more. On a side note, did anyone see the 4 consecutive bombs(one of which he scored on) Ward let go from the point in the Bruins/Devils game last night? I would have loved to see him do more of that on the Rangers.

The key for Mara's game over the long haul will be pairing him with a defenseman who compliments his style.

Rachunek is not that guy long-term.

Renney needs to get Mara significant power play time, something Lewis didn't do in Boston unless Chara was hurt. Mara played more on the PP last game than Rozsival did, so that was a good start. Let's see if it continues tonight against the Islanders.

Awards:
I can safely say after two games that Mara is not a new version of Poti.

great trade by Sather

I wonder if any other GM would trade Nick Boynton for Aaron Ward. Remember Mara went to the Bruins for Nick Boynton. Its just as bad as the Thorton trade

Possibly at some point, but I think that would take time.

Long term Staal is ideally the type of guy you'd want in that role, but I think the Rangers would need someone with more experience to fill the role for now.

You hope at some point the Staal's Baranka's and Sauer's make it and fill the role, but we have to be careful about that when they're 20 and 21 years old.

Mara is an offensive defenseman who if paired with a good stay at home type, could be very valuable to this team.
