i guss the therory was it was worth 20 games, so instead it will be 15 games + first 7 of the playoffs this year. Personally i think they should have given him a straight number of games to be suspended instead of 7 playoff games because what if the Islanders don't make the playoffs or lose in 4?

So if Simon had hit Straka in the face, it would have been even worse?

for starters he hit the guy mostly in the chest which is different then the face and the situation would never happen since straka doesn't hit from behind

Holwegg was hit in the chin and is a lucky guy

I don't care where he was hit (and usually you don't bleed from the chin when you get hit in the chest). The intent was to injure.

My point is, it doesn't matter who gets a stick in the face.

For that matter, Hollweg hit Simon mostly from the side.

from the looks of it, the main part of the stick hit his chest, the blade of the stick nicked his chin

Who cares? The intent was to injure.

while it doesn't condone what Simon did, i think the situation has to be taken into consideration when giving out a suspension. people comparing this to McSorely or Bertuzzi are way off, like i said what Simon did is best compared to Granato(who got 15 games but I would say what Ganato did was worse).

You don't wind up to give a love tap. For that matter, the stick isn't supposed to be up there anyway.

Interesting how 36 hours ago everyone was shocked by what happened. Now the fact that it was Hollweg and he wasn't that hurt is now an issue.

It doesn't matter who Simon hit. He's wrong and it was a disgraceful, dangerous, irresponsible and selfish play on his part.

Gotta tell you bored, I'm really surprised by what you're saying. Especially coming from you.

Possibly stupid question, but for argument sake lets say the Isles tank and miss the PO's, what happens to the other 7 games in that case? Do they carry to the next season or is it just a wash?

One would have to assume that those seven games just disappear, otherwise it would have just been a 22 game suspension. The NHL realllllly dropped the ball here.

My take on the play was that it was a very stupid careless play for starters. But i think alot of people blow it out of proportion comparing it to Bertuzzi or McSorely(as stated many times on this thread and other threads). When deciding how much a suspension should be you have to look at the play. In this case it was a questionable hit facefirst into the boards when Simon DIDN'T have the puck, i do believe that has to have some consideration into what he should have got. What Simon did was (at least in my mind) a little different then if he came out of nowhere and hit somebody the same way(let's say like the brad may hit). I also beleive where the stick hit(i say chest) or strength of his swinging should be considered in deciding the suspension. If Simon hit holwegg in the face at full force chances are Holwegg would have to get reconstructive surgery.

Like i said it was a bonehead move that deserved to be punished, and using Granato's suspension as a benchmark i think Simon got fairly punished(if you assume his previous suspension history was taken as a factor as well).

I would think its probably a wash since they specifically noted those 7 as playoff games.

SO basically he could only suspended 15 games for that.

That should have had zero impact on the decision.

Players get sticks up high, elbows up high, and hands up high in their face all the time, nobody comes back with a baseball swing to the other players face.

The questionable hits, the high hits, the elbows to the face is part of the sport, baseball swings is not.

Granato??

Come on you can't compare the two events, different league, different officials, different time all together... what was that like 20 years ago?

You guess its "somewhat fair"?? Forget about the what ifs with injuries and what actually happened. Thats not the point. The point is everytime something like this happens it SCARS the NHL, and gives them the wrong type of media attention and you would think with the recent lockout and the way they want to market this sport to grow into the future, they would send the proper message and clean this **** up from the game.

TSN has pulled the story. I've added the word Rumor to the title.
