Nice thing about the way the suspension is worded, if the Isles play fewer than 10 playoff games, the suspension carries over to next season.

Completely ignorant article in Sun. Newsday - Simon/NHL

This "brilliant" writer, Wallace Matthews
wallace.matthews@newsday.com
had some real horrible insight about this story.
Quoted from Sunday Newsday 3/11/07

This article really shows the IQ level of the writer. In addition to it greatly insulting Hollweg, the NHL and all the fans, it is poorly written and at times racially innaproriate. Newsday should be shamed for putting such a disrespectful editorial on the back cover.

"Right at the top, let's dispense with this nonsense from Ryan Hollweg about there being 'no place in hockey' for the kind of wood Chris Simon laid to his face Thursday nite...."

"somebody clue that guy (hollweg) in, there has always been a prominent place for that sort of thing in hockey...."

"had Simon's stick landed higher there would have been an eyeball rolling on the ice..."

"...the NHL, which actively markets its game as part Ice Capades, part Rollerball."

"We all know that, we accept it, and - admit it - we generally like it." (Reffering to the slashing incident)

"..maybe after the heat dies down...Simon's retaliation will be included in a future edition of "Honor and Courage'. There's no place for that kind of thing in hockey? Since when?."

"the way is has turned out so far is fine for everyone concerned..."

there is a whole bunch more of numnutz comments in this one. This guy is clearly trying to stir up contraversy for the sake of his own namesake.

there has been a place for gritty hockey, clean and solid hitting and passion.

there is NO place in hockey for idiotic, bloodthirsty, stickwielding like Simon's..

there is a difference..

Pretty much. Wallace Matthews is a joke. They should just stick to having HOCKEY WRITERS write about HOCKEY!

That column is in bad taste, which is not out of the ordinary for a tabloid. But that's out of line.

i have nothing against 25 games(which is roughly 5 more then i think it deserves) but it should be for 25 games not 15 games plus the playoffs but if they don't play 10 or more games in the playoffs the suspension gets moved over to next year. make it a solid number and stick with it.

With Simon likely being suspended to start the season next year this could be the end of his career...

The suspension is a joke, if Hollweg is parilized or dies due to this does he still get 25 games?

According to Bettman logic(20 games to Bert) he'd get less

It is the longest suspension in NHL History.

So if someone is paralyzed or dies from one of Hollweg's patent hit from behind should he be suspended for at least 25 games?

Don't say never. I remember a few years ago a player in college getting paralyzed when he was hit into the boards.

It can happen due to any player, with one bad move.

Getting driven head first into the boards can't paralyze or kill you?

I think you and some other people are have completely overblown the hit by Hollweg (surprise surprise, only Isles fans seem to think it was dirty). It was a borderline penalty to me and I see similar hits happen 10 times in every game. Hollweg plays a physical game but he's not a dirty player at heart and every Ranger fan knows that. Believe what you want though, It doesn't really matter anymore anyway. Simon got what he deserved

Awards:
It doesn't matter who Simon chose to chop against the face. If it was Joe Sakic that his did it to it doesn't make it worse. Lets focus on the action, not who the victim was. And the events that happened before Simon made the decisionn to hit a player in the face with a baseball swing are equally irrelevant.

With that said, I'm done with this subject.
