Backstom

Not sure if its been mentioned yet but so far its seems that fans focus for the offseason pickups seem to be a Dman. Mean while the Wild are turning into a
goalie factory. I was wondering what the members on this board think of
adding Backstrom in the offseason.

Minny has commited large dollars to Manny Fernandez and the already have their
goalie of the future in Josh Harding. Should the oil target the odd man out? He has put up good numbers in his limited role this year and would make a fine back up to Rolie.

Also, if Dwayne were to get hurt, Backstrom has shown that he can step up. I also think he might be a good goalie to bridge the gap between Rolie and Dubnyk.

What's that saying? One in the hand is worth two in the minors?
This would certainly be worth a look in the offseason. Roli's 4M could go a long way towards signing other assets.

Backstrom is ALMOST worth taking a chance on to be the starter and dealing Rollie. He's looked better then Fernandez this season(most of the time anyways). He's younger then Roloson, he would be cheaper then Roloson, but if we were to get him we would either have to A)hang on to Rollie because it would be unclear if he could handle 60 games a year. or B)bring back Juicy, who combined with what Backstrom could get(I'm guessing Juicy could get 1.5 on the open market....maybe more and Backstrom will get about 2.5, more if someone really believes he can start)would cost the same or more then Rollie and JDD. It's intriguing though. I love Rollie, but at the same time I'm all for a gamble that could make us better AND cheaper.

Yeah, after his very solid partial season for the Wild, giving Backstrom a nice UFA contract is probably the tonic this franchise is needing. The only question is - how much will he ask?

What did Martin Gerber get again?

Well I doubt John Muckler will sign Backstrom. Backstrom has been great all season long, has looked better then Manny Fernandez, and looks like he could be a star if put in the right situation. He would command about 2-2.5 mil a year. And the other end of this is that Gerber has looked TONS better here in the 2nd half. I don't think the Sens are too nervous to turn to the guy anymore. The 1st half of this season seems to be more of a fluke for Gerber then his play last year was. It's not like anyone is saying we need to upgrade our goaltending, but in the cap world anywhere you could cut costs while equaling or upgrading a posistion you have to consider it. I don't in any way think Lowe would do this move, but it's something to consider.
