Si.com polled a bunch of NHL players with two questions:
1)Most overrated player in the NHL?
2)Most underrated player in the NHL?
1) Overrated
Alexei Yashin, Islanders.....7%
Bobby Holik, Thrashers.....7%
Bryan McCabe, Leafs....6%
Brad Richards, Lightning.....5%
Sean Avery, Rangers.....4%
Shane Doan, Coyotes.....4%
Marc Savard, Bruins.....3%
Jaromir Jagr, Rangers.....3%
Marty Turco, Stars.....3%
Rick DiPietro, Islanders.....3%
2) Underrated
Jere Lehtinen, Stars.....5%
Henrik Zetterberg, Wings.....5%
Mike Fisher, Senators....4%
Patrick Marleau, Sharks.....3%
Dan Boyle, Lightning.....3%
Steve Sullivan, Predators.....2%
Michael Nylander, Rangers.....2%
Sami Salo, Canucks.....2%
Daymond Langkow, Flames.....2%
Yanic Perreault, Leafs.....2%
Now maybe when some of us say Richards isn't an elite center in the league we won't catch holy hell for it. Not suprised to see Savard up there either, despite the great numbers he's been putting up the last two seasons. Savard is an elite playmaker, not an elite center.
I have a feeling Richards got a large chunk of overrated votes because how much money he makes - isn't he like the highest paid player? If not the highest he's defently near the top, so i can understand from that standpoint.
Most overrated/underrated ACCORDING TO NHL PLAYERS!!
On Sirius' NHL LIVE show yesterday, the hosts read off the results of a poll of NHL players.
According to NHL players,...
MOST OVERRATED:
Yashin
Holik
McCabe
Richards
MOST UNDERRATED:
Lehtinen
Zetterberg
Fisher
Marleau
Then after reading the results of the poll, the hosts of the radio show commented that the 'most overrated' looks more like the most overpaid, and votes by players are probably based on jealousy, especially when you look at Richards, who is clearly an excellent player, but is the most paid, so draws the ire of other players.
Nice to see that NHL players still think Jere Lehtinen is the most underrated player! He gets respect, but whenever fans like me suggest he is one of the greatest two-way wingers ever, deserving HHOF attention if his career continues to excel as he quietly has, many think it's absurd, sad to say.
Love Zetterberg, Fisher and Marleau as well, especially Marleau doesn't get the credit he deserves and would have been getting in a higher profile hockey market.

I think the players are looking more at the paycheck then how those overrated players are seen, Yashin, McCabe and even Richards take alot of flack for being overpaid and most fans seem to think those guys arnt as good as their contract. As a leafs fan i know McCabe gets alot more criticsm then praise.

Yeah, I think the most underrated players according to the NHL players who actually play against them on the ice, is more interesting.
A paycheck should serve as a gauge for determining if someone is over/underrated. If Richards is making $7.8 million but isn't 2nd or 3rd in NHL scoring than by all logic he is somewhat overrated. Certainly doesn't mean he isn't a great player (which he is) but it also doesn't mean he is worthy of that money.

But a paycheque is NOT being used by the players to determine most underrated, is it?
Marleau makes $ 4 million and many non-Sharks fans have thought that is too much, certainly not way underpaid. And there were plenty of critics of Lehtinen getting his last contract which gives him $ 2.7 million this season.
The NHL players only were asked who was most "overrated/underrated" with no criteria given, so of course jealousy prompted salary concerns with overrated. BUT with underrated they probably just thought of tough opposition players they respect more than the hype they receive.

Who cares what a presumably small group of fans think? Any hockey fan knows Marleau is entitled to $4 million and Lehtinen to $2.7 million.
When u are a player in the league, you don't care too much about fan reaction - you know the ultimate measure of your worth to your club is your paycheck. So its no surprise the top paid players who underperform are considered overrated.

It means he is overpayed not overrated. BTW, I highly doubt there was even many answers to this question in locker-rooms. The only people who probably answered were Avery and Roenick.

$4M for a point-per-game center and a team captain is too much?

Then there have been several vocal non-hockey fans on HFBoards...
Anyways, I am always interested in awards given by players to other players, like the Lester B. Pearson Trophy:
2006 Jaromir Jagr New York Rangers
2004 Martin St. Louis Tampa Bay Lightning
2003 Markus Naslund Vancouver Canucks
2002 Jarome Iginla Calgary Flames
2001 Joe Sakic Colorado Avalanche

Of course not.. but until last season he had never scored 30 goals or 60 points per season ever! ... and there were plenty of Marleau naysayers. As a Sharks fan, I used to find it frustrating around here.
I still don't think Brad Richards is over-rated, when on his game he is one of the best overall players in the league. Maybe some bitter Flame players nominated him. lol
