Offseason movements

so i was looking at your guys's salary cap one day and...its insaneley high. so im assuming that you'll have to let go of one or two players next season or trade or smth like that.

so who would probably stay or go or be traded (sorry 8 oclock in the morn isnt doing wonders on my grammar) im assuming forseberg is going, wat about kariya or timonen etc

carry on

Please elaborate. I was under the impression that we could basically resign all of our UFAs and RFAs to FMV deals and still be well under the cap. The only reason we'd be letting someone go would be because of budgetary concerns, not the NHL's salary cap.

What he said. Preds don't spend near the cap because they can't afford to. If they could, they'd probably resign everyone.

That said, the most likely players to leave, in order, are:

1. Forsberg
2. Hartnell
3. Kariya
4. Timonen

That's just my opinion though. The market for UFA defenseman is pretty deep this year so Timmo probably doesn't get targeted too heavily by other teams. Hartnell will get a huge contract offer and I'm not convinced Forsberg, or the Preds, really want him back at anything near a FMV deal. Kariya will follow the money, and since I think the Preds will make him their priority, he'll probably get his best offer from them.

The last month has left me more convinced than ever that Hartnell should be our #1 priority. He is the present and future of the franchise and should be re-signed even at the risk of losing PK and/or the captain.

The salary cap looks out of whack because Forsberg is included. It corrects itself at season's end.

Can you really see Poile paying an oft-injured Hartnell 5-6mil a season? I really think that's the type of offer he'll get as a 24yr old top 6 forward, especially with the cap going up by an estimated 2-4mil next season.

So no other team takes his injuries into consideration, but we do? Nice way to phrase the question.

Hartnell's contract depends on what Poile does with Kariya.

I think Kariya is gone ... with the way he's played since the All Star Break, I really don't want him back either

You're making him out to be some chronically injured glassman. He didn't miss any games due to injury last season, the only games he's missed this year were because of a broken foot incurred blocking a shot(something that's fairly common)

It's not like he's missing games every year with a chronic groin injury or concussion problems.

And nor do I see him getting 5-6 million. More likely...3.5 million, and I gladly think we'd pay that.

I think he and Kimmo get in the 3.2 to 3.8 range depending on playoff fortunes. If it made it to 4M b/c of playoffs, then I think they would do it. Frankly at 4.5M he is a better future investment than re-upping PK.

...and I forgot to mention that I agree a trade of Zids is a likely way to pay for part of it. The emergence of Weber and Suter on the PP and the defense of Zanon and Klein seem like a cheaper alternative.

Might as well get rid of Sullivan too.

19 points ... 7 of those being goals and a -9 since the all star break ... good 4.5 mil spent on one player

Sullivan's problems stem from injuries. What's Kariya's excuse?

I know that you are going to have to make room for Radulov on a scoring line. Been watching the Preds this year to follow some of your youth and it is crazy good.

Where did I make an excuse for Kariya?

I know whats wrong with Sullivan, but its happened the past two seasons right when we need him the most. At the very least, at least Kariya has played for us. And at least Kariya has shown up for his playoff series for us. Sullivan has been non-existent the past two seasons in the playoffs for us.

I would love to resign them all and trade Zidlicky.......and probably moving Mason if we are confident in Vokoun. This would cut a little over 4 million in salary.

As for Kariya, he was the only one to show up last year in the playoffs. I would LOVE to have him back, and I think it is necessary.

Kariya at 4.5 million or Timonen at 4.5 million. Who would you rather have? For me, its Paul Kariya.

ok.. looks like the consensus is we need to let hartnell, kariya, forsberg, timonen, and zidlicky go... should have plenty of cap room

I really like Trotz, but I have no problem with him getting fired if it is deserved, so I'm no apologist.

However, I'd like to see the league average against playoff teams on the road and I'd like to see the record against playoff teams on the road of the other 7 western playoff teams. Without some comparison, being under .500 (.395) against playoff teams on the road isn't all that shocking or meaningful a statistic, imo.

If everyone is similar against playoff teams on the road, it's certainly not damning. If everyone except Nashville is over .500, then perhaps I'd agree.

As far as I'm concerned, if Nashville went 19-0 against playoff teams on the road and lost in the first round, I'd be unhappier with Trotz than I would with his current record and a win in the first round and a hard-fought loss in the second round.

That's being a little extreme, but so is saying "status quo, if we fizzle this year, it was just bad luck, let's give the group one more crack at it"

The answer, as always, lies somewhere in the middle.

Up to me? Keep Timonen and Hartnell, possibly Forsberg. Trade Zids at the draft to try and snag one of Edmonton's late first rounders. Let Kariya go.
