Can anyone out there elaborate on John Blum. I haven't heard a lot about him and if I believed every thing I hear, he is a top 3 pick. I'm looking for more feedback on him, especially what he doesn't excel at the moment.
Whoa mama, I havent anything about a top 3 pick. I've heard top 10 (maybe) and probable top 15. As for the dude. He isn't big what so ever - maximum 6'1'', probably only 6'0''. He is freakishly skinny at 160 soaking wet, but it doesnt matter at the junior level because he is smarter than 95% of the players. He is sound positionally and owns deft offensive instincts. He will have to add at least 20 pounds of bulk to play in the NHL, that will take time. He may have to juice a bit with his frame - do what you have to do though. For a comparison think of Brian Rafalski....with about 3 more inches of height.
Obviously, his size is a bit of an issue (as it will always be for the small guys who have to 'prove' themselbes), but also his decision making. Blum is very offensive minded, and does take chances when he pinches in.
Blum is generally quite smart about when he does pinch in, but he can get caught on occassion and then the opposition has a 2-on-1 the other way.
Blum's shot power seems to be pretty much average. He's got good accuracy, but he's not a missle launcher. Blum does he best work with his puck moving and his timing, rather than blasts from the point.
