do gms share?

Just wondering. Do general managers let other gms know in advance who they are taking in the draft? It would make sense if they did, especially in a draft where the first six picks could be interchangeable.

If lowe knew for sure the team with the third pick was going to go after someone he coveted, he could try to work out a trade. So if lowe had the sixth pick and he knew the team with the third wanted to take alzner, what would it take to switch places. What would he have to give up? Nilsson perhaps. Maybe Torres.

Another thing. Do you think nilsson has a chance to make next year's team given the comments by mctavish in the journal this morning?

Sometimes they do. I can think of 2002 as an axample. Flordia wanted JayBo and they had the #1 pick. They knew Atlanta was going to take Lehtonen so they moved down to 3rd with CBJ and still got the player they wanted.

That being said, I am sure GM's like to keep quiet. If the player they want is known, then teams will try and move in front of them to take that player.

First, I'd like to credit you with a very thoughtful question.

..And the answer you seek is yes, but only when I'm in town!

check out this youtube video. There are 4 of them and they are about the caps as they go through the 06 draft. GM definatley share.

I was really surprised by the honesty they show each other.

"i just want it to look like we're doing something here" - mcphee pretending to talk about a trade offer from the bruins (which he had no intention of taking).... lol

it was really surprising how much they freely talked to one another though.... even getting opinions on trades that they were being offered

Of course, that wouldn't have worked if Columbus knew who Florida and Atlanta were going to pick. And Florida had to pay Atlanta for the privilege of ensuring they wouldn't take Bouwmeester (or trade their pick).

The humming noise in the background makes it very frustrating to watch, unfortunately.

I like how they refer to Backstrom as "the Swede" and how McPhee pretended to run Boston's offer by his team

Thats actually one of the most interesting pieces i've seen done. Its interesting they are all open, and that Washington can kind of eliminate the other selections. Thanks for posting!

thx for the link

very strange that mact talked about nilsson needing more speed though.... my impression of him was that he had speed to burn.... this is a prototypical mact response to a young player with skill however, so i dont know what to really read into it (if anything actually)

bizarre. Why would BOS tell WSH which guy they were going to take?

*edit* to answer my own question, maybe they thought WSH was after Kessel, and letting them know they were after Backstrom wouldn't scare them off?

GM's share

sometimes

other times they try to play games

a few years ago

a gm convinced another one that he was going to take player A in say spot 6--team draft 7th really wanted him and moved into spot 5 to get the player--The GM had no intention of grabbing the player that the second team wanted--but in fact the team that originally had draft spot 5 was going to take the player that the team in spot 6 wanted.

Oilers sometimes don't take the best player available with their pick as they panic when they hear another team is going after the player they covet like DD. Personally I think that is a stupid way to pick players.

That, or they had that 37th pick that they would only give up if Washington really wanted Kessel over Backstrom. If they made the trade and the Caps wanted Kessel from the start - it'd be a completely wasted 2nd rounder.
