The NHL announced today that it has created a new player award which will be presented at this year's annual NHL Awards Show in June. It's called the Sergei Makarov Trophy and it will be presented the most outstanding "ineligible rookie" for 2007. Gary Betman says that new trophy honors the former Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks legend, Makarov, because he showed us all how a 31 year old Red Army veteran can steal the Calder trophy away from a more deserving rookie like Mike Modano.
Seriously, if such an award did exist would Backstrom have any competition for it?

****. I already told my friends about it.
I should learn to read posts completely... sometimes it's just so hard. Especially at 7AM.
I should've know it wasn't real anyway, though, as there would be no point in giving an award to a rookie who's not eligible for rookie of the year. Also, after I found nothing on google about it, I should've been sure.
