Dan Syvret Recalled

Looks like the injury bug has hit us again.

Just got this from the Oilers pipeline email.

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled defenceman Dan Syvret from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.

Is Young going to be playing or are we back down to 5 defencemen?

Smith, Smid, Syvret, Gilbert, Greene and Young are the 6 healthy guys now.

Young played less than 5 minutes last game though.

So, is this all the Oilers' fault for letting Roy come back too soon?

Great.

Anybody realize that Syvret was on the ice for something like 12 goals in 10 games? I don't know how he did that.

It happens when you play 15-20 min a game for a really bad team.

28 mins in some cases.

I was happy when we drafted this guy, but he hasn't shown anything to me yet, while in only a few games, Gilbert has looked fantastic. Maybe we should get other teams to draft for us?

Syvret is an offensive defenseman so for him to excel, he needs to play in that kinda of system. Also, his development was slowed when he was stuck in Hamilton last year when he would get yelled at by the coach everytime he jumped in the rush. He is doing better in Grand Rapids as they have more of an offensive system for their D. He has always been a late bloomer (didn't put up big numbers until his last 2 seasons in London). He will come around when he is given the chance.

Syvret is likely going to be a project. He's undersized, and so, despite his great years in junior, I feel he's going to need to do a lot of adjusting for the size discrepancy that he has vs. most nhlers. The NHL does have smaller, successful players, but not necessarily defencemen.

Having said that, I haven't seen anything blatantly negative to knock him on. He's got a great head on his shoulders and recovers well from mistakes. If he does make it to the NHL, it may not be for another 1-2 years, perhaps longer. I'm still a big fan of his, and I still see him as being a steal as a third round pick as a 21 year old.

Not completely...He got a stick or a puck(can't remember) in the chin.

We need more ammo to ensure we get a higher pick, that's all.

Yeah, Roy took a shot in the chin area near the end of the St. Louis game.

You need guys on the farm who can step in and play some minutes in the NHL. At worst Syvret will be a tweener player who plays 10-15 NHL games a season and is a very good minor league player. At best he could be a no.6-7 NHL d-man. He's still under contract for another year. Let's see what the organisation can do with some of these guys when they control the team.
