Petersen nominated for Masterton

Some positive news in The Sun and The Journal today -- Toby Petersen is the Oilers nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy. The Masterton is awarded in recognition of dedication and perseverence. Petersen clearly qualifies after overcoming diabetes to make it to the NHL.

Say what you want about Petersen as a player, he's obviously a guy who doesn't quit when the chips are down and isn't easily discouraged. The odds of making it to the NHL without this kind of debilitating disease are tough enough.

Good for him.

Well deserved, Toby. Congratulations.

It is tough enough to make an NHL roster and contribute. But to do so with a major disease like diabetes, it requires a special character and will to persevere. Toby Peterson has earned accolodates and respect.

I really gained alot of respect for the guy when I saw the piece on him and all the stuff he has to do to play.

A very well deserved nomination... congrats Toby.

For crying out loud, give Petersen a break. Any guy who overcomes what he has to make it to the NHL, even as a marginal fourth-liner, has more drive and backbone than most people, including you and I.

A lot of things suck in a big way about the Oilers right now. Petersen's nomination is NOT one of them.

Well - there will be 29 of them.. think it's one of those where every team elects someone, and they choose from all nominees.

Nothing to get excited about... he has no chance.

Congrats to Toby, but does anyone doubt that this is going to Kessel?

You don't know the other nominees (I'm guessing Kessel wins), but he has no chance?

That's right... most people outside of Edmonton has no clue who he is, and I'm not entirely clear on what he has overcome? Plugging away in the minors for a long time and working hard and finally getting to the NHL? There are many many players like that around the league, many are better known around the league and contribute to their team more than TP.

Petersen

So, you have no clue who is nominated and you don't know what Petersen has overcome to make it to the NHL, but he has no chance?

He's diabetic, which is a pretty serious medical condition...

OK - enlighten me... why should Peterson get the Masterton? What will make all the professional writers think 'I know... let's vote Toby Peterson'.

Is it... is it worse than Kessels cancer? Hell, even last year Murray didn't get to be a finalist (which he should have in fairness)... but if you guys hold out hope, then I guess that's a good thing. Carry on.

Enlighten you? Saying a guy has no chance when you don't know the nominees and aren't certain about what he's overcome is flat-out ignorant and shows zero regard for the fact he was even nominated.

It's very unlikely Petersen will win, given Kessel's comeback from cancer. That said, it doesn't change the fact that Petersen has overcome a lifelong condition to make it this far and be nominated. Crapping on that by way of your "no chance" remark is kind of missing the point, no?

Just being a bit realistic.

I think Smid had a great year for a rookie defenseman... I'm pretty sure the Oilers would nominate him for the Calder if it were by nominations. Do I think he'll win the Calder? No. Do I know who the Calder nominees will be? No. Am I being an ******* for thinking he won't win?

I think Smyth had a really good year. If he were an Oiler, I'm sure the Oilers would nominate him for the Hart(again if it were by nominations). Do I think he'll win the Hart? No. Do I know who the Hart nominees will be? No.

Good God, some people have no class.

I'll usually stick up for OntOilFan because, like it or not, he's generally pretty realistic (if not excrutiatingly blunt), and I've built thick skin for this boards pesimism, but you guys (OOF and OilSlick) really pissed me off with this one. He gets recognized for overcoming diabetes and playing in the NHL and you have to come on and bitterly cut him down and say 'Oh, but he wont win, what is diabetes anyways?'

Get a life, and pull the tire iron out of your *****. Sometimes a little bit of positive feedback is alright.
