Mike Comrie from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Jeff Woywitka, a first round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and a third round pick in 2005 NHL Entry Draft

.... Can't argue it

May I be the first (hopefully) to say...

EAT THAT, MURRAY!

Have to admit, I'm surprised he went to Phillie...but pleased all the same. Eastern Conference sure beats the alternative.

I'm ok with the deal I suppose. But that draft pick isn't going to be very high. With the way Philly is playing, it'll be in the mid twenties at least or something like that.

But at the very least Lowe addressed something we desperately need. Talent on the back end. It's an ok deal.

If it's any consolation for Oiler fans, Flyer fans on ESPN are absolutely livid!!

Most are comparing this to the Oates trade of a couple of years ago.

Considering the return we would have got from Anaheim, I like this deal alot more. We replaced Perry with Woywitka, an upgrade IMO, but our Draft pick will be alot lower (Ana's woulda probably been a top 15 pick, whereas Phi's will be a 20-30 pick. I think I like the deal, but I'll need some time to think about it.

Any chance that Philly flips the rights to Anaheim? I'm just wondering since they have the rights and are already deep up front.

Way to go Lowe

Lots of people on these boards and other boards seem to be bashing Lowe pretty hard. Personally, I like this deal. Woywitka is supposed to be a future top 4 d-man and we get a 1st round pick this year and a 3rd round pick in '05. Comrie was doing NOTHING for this team and it was great to get rid of the spoiled brat. Also, lots of people seem to be over-rating Comrie waaaaay too much. What the heck did some of you think he would get in a return? Someone like Alexei Kovalev or Dany Heatley or something. Comrie doesn't have much worth when everyone knows his attitude.

Good job Lowe!

You beat me to it. I saw some quotes saying they are mad that they gave up a "solid" "blue chip" defenceman.

"Any chance that Philly flips the rights to Anaheim?"

Arrg, you beat me to my other point.

Not sure how we should feel about this. Solid defensemen are very hard to come by these days. Hmmm...

I am more than happy with the return - cash or no cash included.

I was one who thought Perry and a 1st was good value for Comrie (two first rounders) and, if Philly's pick was 10-20, I doubt Lowe would have insisted on the 3rd.

Who was it that is always frustrated Lowe for not getting that extra pick in his deals? Well, he seems to be changing his ways.

Now, if only we can move Woywitka, the 1st and the 3rd for Zainullin I'll be happy

---------------------

Any idea if Woywitka could crack the roster and push Fergie/Cross to another club? I'm not sure how his year has been going...

Good question, plus wasn't it Clarke who mocked the earlier speculation and said that the last thing he needed was a small center?

It will be nice just to turn the page on this one and see if the Oilers can move on.

Like this one better than the Anaheim trade. This one took me by surprise though.

Woywitka > Perry (Also addresses our needs)
Ana 1st > Phi 1st + Phi 5th

Oh well, at least this whole thing is over with. Have a nice life Mikey, don't let the door hit your butt on the way out.

I like the deal alot better then the Ducks.

1. you add a signed player to your system.

2. you add depth to the weakest position which is defense

3. you don't strengthen your rival(Ducks)

It makes sense for now and the future.

Woywitka is a much better prospect. Perry is going to have a tough time cracking the NHL if he keeps trying to desperately avoid battles along the boards and physical play.

Who cares about a third rounder? Are you serious? Heck, we got Kyle Brodziak with a 7th rounder. Assuming our scouting staff continues doing what they're doing... that third rounder could go a long way. Who knows?

It's PHI 3rd, not 5th.

Yah, I have to agree that this is a good deal. Jeff helps our defensive depth situation (and you know that someone will leave, and wouldn't suprise me if its Smith in the offseason or deadline)

Consider when Comrie was drafted (late 3rd, 91st overall), and consider he got two 1st rounders and a 3rd for that. If Lowe can continue to draft some nice players we may be looking back and laughing.

SM

While this doesn't help the on ice problems at all, this does get the monkey of the teams back. Without the cancer that is Comrie hanging around, the players can concetrate 100% on hockey. I all by gurantee a victory against LA tonight.

At the very least, we KNOW that Comrie isn't going to come back and hurt Edmonton by being in the Western conference. I don't see how Comrie is going to get the icetime he needs there though... There's only so much time to go around...

I think you Oilers fans should be very happy.

Jeff Woywitka is a solid defenseman whom should have been in the NHL by now. I think he'll be taking a spot in your line up by the end of the month. He isn't very flashy, but he gets the job done at both ends. His upside is probably a very dependable 3rd defenseman.

While the first may be in the late twenties, it's still a first rounder in which you can draft a solid player for the future. Or now with two first round selections, it gives you the option of trading up using your two first round selections.

Now the question is when does Philadelphia come to Edmonton.....?!

Good trade IMO for the Oilers.

If Jeff really can get into the lineup as early as the end of the month... this will effectively end Smith's tenure in Edmonton. The Oilers will probably let Ferguson walk at the end of the season (hopefully). A Smith trade will open room on the blueline for

Brew-Semi-Cross-Staios-Woywitka-Bergeron-and possibly Lynch for next season. Unless the young kids don't perform well... I think the future defense is looking pretty decent. Though, we still need more quality and depth in that regard.
