Canes in the World Championships?

Might as well start some of these offseason threads. I know it's still a ways away, but who might go and who will bow out due to injuries?

I'm guessing Cole, Vasicek, Kaberle, Seidenberg, Gleason, Brind'Amour, Whitney, Staal and Williams are invited. Whether or not they go is up to them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ladd went.

Cole will likely be there. Kaberle takes the time off to get his shoulder back in shape. Seidenberg will be there. Gleason will be there. Brind'Amour will take a pass. Whitney will take a pass. Williams will be there. Staal is the wildcard. I'm not sure what would be best for him, the experience or the rest. I'll say he goes due to his selection to the olympic team last year.

Well, Cam Ward, Staal, Williams and Mike Commodore are going. Whitney "if he gets things checked out" according to John.

I'm pretty surprised Mike Commodore is going. I know a lot of the "better" players are in the playoffs but still.

Yeah he is the name that doesn't match. There still are other good names out there. For example, Foote, Bouwmesster, Brewer, Smith, Aucoin, Morris, and possibly McCabe and Gill. not all of them are better than Mike.

They said Stevey Y called Staal, Commodore, Brindy and Williams personally. Brindy declined and Staal and Commodore definitly accepted.

I know it's a honor to play for your country, but is this really what's best for our team?

If a short offseason was their excuse for their poor play early on this season, why would you voluntarily shorten this offseason to play in this tournament? Not to mention the risk of someone like Eric Staal or Justin Williams getting injured. That would doom our season before we even had an opportunity to start it.

True and there is merit to that but it also builds a unique expierence. Maybe a gold medal would rewake Staal and Williams who have been somewhat dormant this year.

When Team Canada calls, you answer. Unless you're injured or dead. If you don't, especially for players like Staal and Williams, it may influence if they give you a call next time the Olympics come around.

Also I think this confirms how highly Mike Commodore is starting to be regarded around the league. He may not be flashy, but he's a fine crease clearing defenseman with a bit of offensive upside. It's good to have confirmation that your players are worth having and you're not overrating them. Commodore is like a poor man's Adam Foote.

I agree with you CF. Never turn down that kind of call. Even if you don't want to go it is an honour to even be considered. Who is that in your avatar CF?

I'm guessing Nick Petricki =/

Yeah, I've always thought that Commodore was very valuable to Carolina and that it'd take overpayment to trade him. Maybe it's not overpayment anymore

Nick Petrecki. He's a blueliner available in this year's draft that is headed for Boston College. Carolina wants after him pretty bad, from all I can gather. Former Plymouth Whalers first round pick, and we know all about that situation. Unless the negotiations soured PK on this kid, then it's not unlikely we could see him in the sightless eye should he last to the 10th or 11th overall pick, depending upon the outcome of the game today.

Tough kid. Skates like a bull, plays the body, and has untapped offensive potential. He was 6'3 215 at 17 years old and already plays like a grown man. He's going to be an absolute beast next season in the NCAA.

Sweet, I hope we can pick him up. We are in need of a defensive prospect. What is he projected to be? Top 4?

It depends on who you talk to, really. I've seen him projected from anywhere between six and fifteen. No clue where he'll end up, but i'm hoping Carolina is able to snag him even if it means moving up. He's the perfect type of player to have in our system.

He projects to be a possible #1 guy depending on how his game develops. Where he'll be drafted depends on who all you talk to. Some scouts and writers for some publications think he's the best defensive prospect in the draft over even Alzner. According to others you don't want to even touch him in the first round. How I look at it is he has a NASTY physical game and is more of a stay-at-home type then Jack Johnson. That said, he has a TON of untapped offensive potential that could see him being a premier defenseman in the league should he develop properly at BC. Worth drafting at #10 if guys like Voracek, Hamill, JVR and Couture don't slip.

I think in previous draft years, Petrecki doesn't get past 5-8 with the frame that he has and his ability, but we're seeing more of a move to the small puck moving defensemen and there are several first round defensemen under 6'0.

The thing I like about him most are the things I hated about Johnson. Petrecki isn't "hollywood", and has a history that sounds a lot like that of Rod Brind'Amour. I think that JR is going to be looking to draft a character player this year after that disaster in Johnson and Petrecki certainly fits the bill.

As far as comparisons go, i've heard Chris Phillips mentioned quite a bit.

Nic Wallin has so far not been invitet.. god I dislike Bengt-Ake Gustafsson... Didnīt picked Steen out last year. Sure, we won, but it wont happen this year.
No Wallin means no Mathias Tjarnqvist, no Sjostrom, no Mikael Holmqvist and so on.

Lucky us, we got Jorgen Jonsson, the worlds greatest player...

Does anyone know if we will get to watch this action on cable TV in mainland US?
It is usually covered very badly here.
