Islanders/Habs rumor

According to Mtl Media (110% show), there's talk about a 1/1 trade with NYI and Habs. The players involved would be Saku Koivu and Michael Peca.

What do you think? Who would get the best?

If the Habs were to make this trade (and they won't), than that means we would be relying on Mike Ribeiro for offence, a scary thought.

If Koivu leaves for Peca, the team can move to Siberia for all I care.

Well, I'd be happier in this case if they move to the moon.

I think so too.
I think that it would be fair if the Isles would add Dave Scatchard in the deal and the Habs add Chad Kilger.

I hope to god this happens.
Maybe it would wake up Koivu's click here and anyways, we have Ribeiro now. Peca is unhappy where he is, Koivu is unhappy where he is (have you guys noticed his face when he didn't start on that 5 minutes powerplay tonight?).

I'd do this in an heartbeat.

Peca is unhappy?...He's come out and said Long Island is where he wants to be and wants to finish what he started.

As for the deal?

Peca is the Isles captain, heart and soul and plays against every teams top line.

Can Koivu be Isles #1 checking centre?

He may add more offense but will add less defensive and physical play.

I'll keep Peca over Koivu as he fits the Isles needs better then Koivu.

Peca is going nowhere. Montreal fans need not worry about getting "ripped off".

110% is not a reliable source for anything. 110% bull is what it should be called.

It would have to be bigger than a 1-for-1...

I don't see Montreal pulling this one off... Gainey was brought in to make the team better, not the other way around.

It was on 110%. That means there's no valid source, and it's just more Koivu-bashing from a group of clowns.

rumour

I heard it too on 110% and I think we can trust these guys .

But I heard too on Cafeine (not a really good source but they probably take it from 110%) that the Isles will put Parrish also in the trade to reduce their ( "masse salariale" in english)

with the way the isles have played of late, since the ranger loss actually, i reeeeally doubt this happens, though i'd love to acquire koivu for someone else less emblematic of the team. peca has played like a young guy again and hasn't ever suggested that HE wants to leave. he's always only commented on what his reaction would be to being traded. plus, people outside long island don't understand that wang is really a lot more involved in stabiizing the islanders than it may seem to the outside world. he talks to the team's core players from time to time, sort of to smooth things over between them and MM. he supports MM despite mass outcry against the man... no, the isles won't be doing any foundation shaking this season unless (1) they save a ton of $, (2) rip someone off and (3) are out of contention. i think that's the way Wang would want it and i'm hopeful that this recent surge continues. i like the team. (sure i'd love to have denis gauthier and brendan morrow to round out the squad, but i don't see them as absolutely necessary.)

If Peca goes I expect cheaper talent then Koivu($5m) to be the return. At this point I don't expect any isles trade with the nyi fighting their way back into the playoff race. Why upest chemistry again?

Koivu's the most skilled player in the deal, but he's actually only had one really great season, that 71 pt season. His production's not much higher then Parrish's and he makes 2x as much.

Koivu's career numbers:
1995-1996:82 games, 20 goals,25 assists
1996-1997:50 games,17 goals,39 assists
1997-1998:69 games,14 goals,43 assists
1998-1999:65 games,14 goals,30 assists
1999-2000:24 games,3 goals,18 assists
2000-2001:54 games,17 goals,30 assists
2001-2002:3 games,0 goals,2 assists
2002-2003:82 games,21 goals,50 assists
2003-2004:11 games,4 goals,9 assists

Parrish's career numbers:

1998-1999:73 games,24 goals,13 assists
1999-2000:81 games,26 goals,18 assists
2000-2001:70 games,17 goals,13 assists
2001-2002:78 games,30 goals,30 assissts
2002-2003:81 games,23 goals,25 assists
2003-2004:22 games,7 goals,4 assists

I don't know what to think of this.

One one hand, the Isles are playing great right now. Milbury messed with chemistry once, and they lost 7 straight. I'd hate to see what happens if you move the captain.

On the other hand, Koivu is that creative playmaker the isles so desperately need on their power play. He could play 2nd line C, or he could center Yashin. A PP unit of Yashin,Koivu, and Hunter would be great.

And judging by the numerous rumors about Parrish, Hamrlik, or Rivet also being involved(Spectors), I'm alittle afraid that Milbury's gonna ***** up another deal here.

Though if Peca for Koivu, 1 for 1, goes down, you're not going to hear me complain.

But there have been many isles rumors lately, and judging by all the responses here, I'm guessing there is a slim chance MTL/Isles are even talking.

The Isles are my favorite team, and Koivu is my favorite player. That said I'd love to have Koivu on the Isles but I absolutely hate the deal. Peca and Koivu bring two totally different styles to the game. Koivu wouldn't fill Peca's role on the Isles and vice versa. Not to mention that Koivu isn't as valuable to the Isles as he is to the Canadiens. The guys
(players) in Montreal all seem to like Koivu and play for him and respond to him, Peca has not had the best track record in Buffalo or LI. I believe Rob Ray questioned Peca's leadership in Buffalo and pretty much everyone has questioned his leadership on the Island at one point or another. IMHO Montreal gets ripped big time on this deal no matter who else is thrown in for the deal because IMO again Koivu's presence seems to be pretty irreplaceable.

You speak of Ribeiro like he could fill Koivu's skates...your insane if that's what your trying to say. Ribs is good but he's no first line center, not even close.

110%=Morons. These goofs never liked Koivu.(Bergeron,Villeneuve,Rinfret). But according to them Ribeiro will take us to the promised land. Tune them out.

Funny. I've heard that there were murmurs that some Isles thought Peca's leadership role is overstated, but other than his MAdness, I haven't heard anyone from the organization say anything out loud. In fact, I don't buy it. Sure there are bound to be some unhappy campers if they think they deserve more credit then Mike, but that's always natural. Jealousy is ugly but normal. Happens to people everywhere. My advice to Isles fans, if they want to see the effect Mike has on the team, is this: Look how the team plays when he's playing well. Then look at how it does when he's not. Usually, you'll see a shocking correlation. It's ridiculous to think that these guys don't follow his example somewhat. I would add that they have other examples to follow as well. Aucoin and Scatch are obvious; KJ is quietly obvious; I have to say that Niinimaa plays all out and that seems to be catching on. Parrish plays hard. Yashin has been battling since the last quarter of last year.
My point is, sure this team has enough leadership, but Peca is like a weathervane and gets plenty of respect in addition to the jealousy that floats around him. We should not trade him for Koivu despite the fact that he's another player who garners respect. Koivu is always going to be admired for perseverance, wherever he goes. Peca will always be a hard competitor who has the stigma of being a former hold-out attached to his persona. Fair or unfair, some will always frown upon that latter fact.
