CBC article about Canes missing playoffs

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/columns/morrison/

Thought I would share this if case you haven't seen it yet. Interesting enough, the Rutherford vs Lavy spin that looking back make sense now, but at the time I did not see it at all.

I think that last year, the Canes were doing something 'fresh'. Their style was a liuttle bit different, a player like Staal broke out, Brind'Amour produced at a high level when it appeared 2 years before that he was declining.

They scored and lived off the rush, when few teams did. They adjusted fastest and best to what the rules now allowed. Other teams didn't so much copy them this year, but found ways to do the same.

So, if you look at it, there 11 teams that are/were in the playoff hunt. The 2 surprises are the Isles and Leafs. I guess the Pens emergence qualifies too. I think a playoff hangover, combined with early injuries affected their start. Afterwards, the Canes were just one of the good teams in the conference, the separation was gone.

Really, only Buffalo clearly distanced the pack. Ottawa should have, as they seem the most complete team whenever I watch them.

So, really, I don't see that much separation between most of the teams. It's such a small margin for error now.

This is very true.

As far as the Canes went this season, they seemed to lose some close games in situations that they almost always won them in last season. Last year the little things (bounces etc.) seemed to go their way more often than not, but it has been the opposite this year. Last year, they won many times without a real good effort. This year, if they didn't bring it, they lost.

Well I don't see us getting rid of Peter. I think alot of that was just speculation with little merit.

I know how you guys feel, similar situation to us in '96, but the Devs lost in their last game of the season to at the time lowly-Ottawa to get eliminated.

i think Carolina will be back in the playoffs soon with the good young players.
Will you guys now root for Atlanta or Tampa to go all the way?

I'll definitely be rooting for the Lightning. I'll never root for the Thrashers. I hate all things Atlanta: Braves, Falcons, Thrashers

So you would root for the Devs, Leafs or Rangers vs Atlanta in the playoffs?
Interesting

Not really "root" for any of those teams. More like root against the Thrashers

The article points out the possiblity of Lavs being fired over one bad season.

He must be new to hockey and not familiar with an ex Canes coach by the name of Maurice.

How so? I think the article basically sums up the Hurricanes season (injuries, timing, luck, etc.). I don't think the article was off base at all.

As far as the Laviolette potential firing, that will never happen. It's pure speculation by the columnist. However, I believe that is what columnists do best. Make-up speculation to sell papers.

I don't believe the article was poorly written at all. Poorly researched, maybe.

I mean the flow and such was horrible. It just didn't feel like it was professionally written at all.

I think the flow was fine....it flowed right from us possibly firing Lavs and eating the cost of his contract to the unexpected firing of the Devs coach!

The article reminded me of two things I've concluded over the years:

1. Canadian media love JR. He's a darling up there and pals with a lot of the right people. He is almost always touted as a top GM in Toronto media abnd by the XM hockey folks (based in TO). Few things are his fault. Which is ok, we need a star and he does a lot of good things, but he seems to do no wrong in some eyes.

2. A lot of the major hockey media don't closely follow the Canes, and don't really know what happened. I can't count the number of times this season I have heard the experts, from Bill Clement to Phil Esposito to whomever, talk about the team and clearly are not up to date on what's going on. They don't know who's hurt and who's not, who's playing well and who's not. Their reviews of us seem to be lazily taken from boxscores, team stats and the updates in TSN. So this guy may not have a feel at all for what is going on in the coach, management and ownership team here.

Speaking of playoffs...if the Canes won out all they'd need after tonight was a Habs loss (OTL or otherwise) to the Leafs and the Canes would have been in.
