I didn't know Hudler was going to play in the WJC.

Out of the Detroit papers...

Junior championships

The Wings will be well represented at the World Junior Championships Dec. 26-Jan.5 in Helsinki, Finland.

The tournament matches the best under-19 players in the world. It annually one of the most exciting events on the hockey calendar.

"Itís as good as it gets," said Jim Nill, the Wingsí assistant general manager. "Itís a great experience for a young player."

Forward Jiri Hudler (Czech Republic) will leave Thursday and be captain of the Czech team.

Other recent Wings draft picks who are headed for Finland include goalie Jim Howard (United States), defenseman Derek Meech (Canada), forward Vladimir Kutny (Slovakia) and forward Valtteri Filppula (Finland).

Howard, whom the Wings drafted in the second round in June, will share the goaltending with Michiganís Al Montoya on the U.S. team.

I'm happy that Hudler can play in the WJC. A change of scenery might do him good.

Meech apparently had a great camp and is turning a lot of heads in Canada. Hopefully he'll have a good WJC.

I think his development will really suffer for missing the 6 minutes of ice time he gets each game for the Wings. Now that's a quality developmental startegy, that is. coughMORONScough.

I hope so too. After kronwall out defensemen in our system are pretty weak to say the least, hopfully meech can emerge as our number 1 defensive prospect now.

Paul Ballyntyne is turning some heads this year. After started out the year in the ECHL averaging a point per game, he has been playing steady and even providing some offensive chances. He still has a while to go before he is NHL ready, but hopefully he can be a late bloomer and continue to develop.
