if i remember correctly, he did clear waivers so we weren't the only team not interested. But do you think that will have any effect on him wanting to come here? Like he's got a grudge against the habs now...

Even tho he is talented and i do like him, id perfer to see them get someone with size...
it depends i guess what year did he get played on waivers? he wouldn't hold a grudge against the team i doubt... it would be against the managment at the time when he was placed on waivers if any grudge at all.

from what i understand Briere used the waiver thing as motivation to become a better player, so it was probably a blessing in disguise judging by where he is today as a player.

Streit looked better as a forward, and actually so does Dandenault. Also, if you can find sign some top 4 defenseman, having too much defense is a problem i am willing to have.

Gorges, Streit, Bouillon and Dandenault are number 6 defenseman and if you can substantially upgrade on them, you worry about their situation later.

Offering 6 millions to Markov would pretty much set the market for Timonen...

When did Gainey say he is going after two UFAs. Not once did I hear that. The two UFAs he referred to are Souray and Markov.

try this
"Nous devons être actifs, a-t-il dit. Nous devons vendre l'équipe, notre programme et la ville aux joueurs qui peuvent nous aider. Nous pourrions aller chercher deux joueurs. Nous avons les ressources pour le faire. Sauf qu'il n'y a pas de garantie. C'est comme pour la coupe Stanley."

They'll look for a big 3rd line center and a 2nd pairing defenseman who has hands and a good breakout (hopefully right handed). This would leave the Habs with.

Higgins-Koivu-Ryder
Kovy/Lats-Pleks-Kosty
Perez-UFA-Kovy/Lats
Milroy-Lappy-Begin

With Grabs, Chippy and Ferland as callups.

Markov-Komo
Souray-UFA
Streit-Dandy

With Cube, Yemelin (hopefully) as callups.

If the UFA defenseman is good at transition it would help the team vastly, and the 3rd defense pair would be solidified with Streits puckmoving abilities. Also, Steit can play fowards if needed, with Cube filling his spot in. Hopefully Gainey could dump either one of Dandy or Cube though...

Unless they sign on July 1st^^

Oh well... I'd take a reliable D-man if Souray's gone. Too bad Phillips is (or will be?) signed.

if either of them aren't signed by July 1st they probably won't be coming back, and at the very best it would cost alot more money to re-sign them as of July 1st, i guess we'll see.

the faster they are re-signed the better for us, before some other dope gm offers someone a ridiculous contract that inflates the market again.

Then, same for Markov. There's not much difference between the two. Except that we get to know Timonen a lot less...

However, Timonen > Kubina, and Kubina won a 5 M$ pay-check last year, with a tighter cap.

I'd love to rely on a Markov-Timonen duo, we would almost double the hockey smarts of our defense. But I'm afraid we won't be the only ones interested, if Nashville doesn't resign him before July 1st. They can certainly use him for a couple more seasons while all their great young Dmen are quietly maturing.

I understand... but didn't some of our UFA signed on July 1st on the last 2 or 3 years?

As for the forward, I know Im dreaming but damn do I think this is a great opportunity to get Lecavalier or Richards from Tampa. The ownership said its trimming payroll and Tampa really cant hold on to their top 3 forever. If not Drury or Smyth imo would better address our problem of grit then Briere would. Then again Shanahan and Gurein would also look good as powerforwards and could also mentor Latendrese.

If only...
Komisarek will be even better next year, dont forget about that. Boullion I noticed was just rounding back into form later in the season, missing all that time with his leg injury really hurt him. To me, Boullion is playing good when he is skating more and starting the breakout rush, something he didnt start doing untill later on in the season.
As for prying a forward from Tampa, not going to happen. One: they would need to trade assets to retrieve one of these players, something they've worked hard at replenishing. Two: Who wants a Richards worth 7.8 million, who only got 70 points and was a -19. Three: Lecavalier is the last of the big three that they would trade.
I agree with the Drury interest. Personally, I think that he will be the one to go, not Briere. He would be a perfect fit for the second line duties, and provide some solid scoring ability. Could you imagine a Lats-Drury-Higgins line, that would be damn solid.

No they are not actually. I dont want Briere here, if we want to bring another small center, give a chance to Grabovski instead, this kid got so much potential and he'll cost less.

The priority is on Defense not offense guys.

I've learnt to just wait to see what will happen. When you see that Kaberle earns less than McCabe or Kubina while signing his contract the same summer, you just have to wonder...

Timonen would be a great pick. Probably the best available this summer.

ugh
i dont understand you guys and your manlove for briere.

is he the 82 game big center we've been looking for?

briere has had what 2-3 80+ game season and he would be our smallest player or close...

PLUS...HE"S A FREAKIN DIVER.....everyone used to bash ribeiro for the dive, but now you want briere??

dont get me wrong he had an awsome season...but honestly...getting smaller? how does that help?
