My wish list for a realistic off season looks like this if

Forwards:
Koivu - 4.75
Kovy - 4.5
Hartnell - 3.0 *** first signing (Adds size 2-way and 25 goals + work ethic )
Ryder - 2.5
Belanger - 1.5 *** second sigining (good PK man solid 2 way)
Higgins - 1.4
Pleky - 1.2
Begin - 1.0
Perez - 900k
Latendresse - 850k
Kosty -750k (relative cap hit)
Lapierre - 563k
13th forward enforcer 500k

forward bill - 24.6m after Samsonov buyout factored in

Defence:
Souray - 5.25m
Markov - 4.75m
Hannan - 3.5m *** (may be more like 4m but hard to say)
Dandy - 1.75 (I would love to get rid of one of dandouillon just cant see it)
Bouillon - 1.75
Komisarek - 1.5m
Streit - 600k
Gorges - 500k

Defence Bill - 19.6m

Nets
Huet - 2.875
Halak - 500k

Total - 47.5m for 23 players (hopefully we could dump one of Dandoullion or not have to buy out Samsonov rather just get rid of him some how else to save a couple bucks) Maybe take chips instead of Belanger if it comes to it.

Hartnell Koivu Ryder
Higgins Pleks Kosty
Tender Belanger Kovy
Begin Lappy Perez
Enforcer

Markov Komi
Hannan Streit
Souray Dandy/Cube/Gorges

Huet / Halak (battles on for #1 at the start much like Aebi / Huet last year)

Remeber our lineup is still young it will improve on it own with time especially the 2nd line. The D becomes alot more sold with Hannan added to IMO.

I really think E.Belanger will get signed to replace Bonk. The 2nd player will be a big one,Briere,Drury or Gomez or via trade

I think that if they go for Briere or Drury or Gomez they won't be needing Belanger.

1st Briere or Drury or Gomez
2nd Koivu
3rd Plekanec
4th Lapierre

Also don't forget that Plek is gonna get a decent raise also. Probably somewhere around 1,5 to 2,0.

A lot of fans use the Buffalo model as a model for success without size, but I still think that size in an integral part of the game. You can wn without it, but it can cost you as well in terms of injuries and big tme turnovers.

Getting Timonen would be unreal. I salivate at this team with actual defense and hockey sense beyond just the first pairing thanks mainly to Markov.

Isn't Hartnell an RFA? What makes you think we can sign him?

I've heard him discussed enough that I'm reasonably certain he's unrestrictd. You might be thinking Upshall, who was part of the trade for Forsberg.

He's only 24 and finishing his 6th NHL season. He made over the league average this year.

I don't get it.

The lockout counts as a year so it makes it 7 years as a pro and he turned down a long term deal in the offseason from the Preds so most likely he is going to test the UFA waters I would make him a priority he is definatley the type of player this team needs and could pot 30+ goals on a line with Koivu and really help the lines 5 on 5.

Are you kidding me, Timonen is one of the elite defensemens in the league. Not only does he put up solid points every year, he plays solid d as well. And has been on the predators since they started.

totally agree... Timonen is in the Markov and Kaberle category.. he does everything right and not to flashy. Adding a ton of pts.

but my plan was..
1- Ryan Smyth (5,85 for 4 years)
1- Andrei Markov (5,2 for 3 or 4 years)
2- Scott Hannan (3.5 for 3 years)

Higgins - Koivu - Ryder
Smyth - Grabo - Kost
Latendresse - Plekanec - Kovalev
Bégin - Lapierre - Milroy

Markov - Komisarek
Streit - Hannan
Dandenault - Bouillon

3- See trade possibilities like :

Koivu, Samsonov, Pick for Richards.. ok it's unreal but i'm dreaming of it
If not..
Kovalev and Dandenault to Wash for Sutherby, Pothier and mid-high prospect or Clarke and ??

When I started the post i tried to be realistic

d-man? top winger? Boivin says money is now available to do all this.

The Habs could look like this
1st-UFA UFA Ryder
2nd-Latendrese Koivu Kovalev
3rd-Higgins Pleks Kostitsyn
4th-Begin Lapierre Prez
(injury call up-Grabo-Milroy-Chipchura)

Komi-Markov
Dandy Sauray
Obryne Streit
Boulion
(Cote- Injury call up)

Huet Halak
( Price-on injury callup)
If both Souray and Markov come back we don't have the cap room for two big name UFA. Instead I would look for character players instead. Not expensive and we needed more leadership at times this year

Good trades...I like the idea of adding a character guy in Shelley and a decent d-man for Ryder. I didn't think Emelin could come over for another year though. Maybe give Cote a shot in his spot. Cote is as good as Bouillon or Ninnimaa for sure. I also would send Sammy to minors instead of buying him out this way it will save a 1.4 million cap hit.

Hartnell is an excellent choice. I'd be very weary of any aquisitions this summer than involve only skilled wingers. We have skilled players, most are young, one is extremely underacheiving. This team needs a few Shayne Corsons if it's to be successful with Carbo as head coach.

I can't see Columbus even thinking about that trade. Klesla is #2 on their team for TOI (after Adam Foote), is 25, and has a Cap friendly contract until 09/10 ($1.566). While he hasn't totally justified his 4th overall selection in 2000, I highly doubt they trade him anywhere, unless it's a substantial overpayment.

Maybe philips is being paid 1 million per goal or minutes to get from one end of the rink to another or based on how many Pandas are in the Ottawa zoo?

As Gainey said he intends to rebuild the defensive corps in the summer I'd think a reliable, puck moving defenseman will be one of the UFA we'll try to sign. Or maybe we'll make a trade as he also suggested.

Not sure where the cash will come from. Looking at the Habs:

(1) Under Contract for next season already, including the buyout of Samsonov:
Saku Koivu $4,750,000.00
Alex Kovalev $4,500,000.00
Sergei Samsonov $3,525,000.00 [buyout $(2,350,000.00)]
Steve Bégin $1,033,000.00
Guillaume Latendresse $850,000.00
Garth Murray $625,000.00
Jaroslav Halak $475,000.00
Andrei Kostitsyn $801,800.00
Maxim Lapierre $562,500.00
Francis Bouillon $1,875,000.00
Mathieu Dandenault $1,750,000.00
Mark Streit $600,000.00
Josh Gorges $450,000.00
Cristobal Huet $2,750,000.00
TOTAL $22,197,300.00

(2) Restricted Free Agents - incl. Raise estimates
Michael Ryder $3,000,000.00 (Hitting 30 goals will cost the Habs)
Chris Higgins $1,250,000.00
Alex Perezhogin $750,000.00
Tomas Plekanec $1,250,000.00
Mike Komisarek $2,000,000.00
TOTAL $8,250,000.00

(3) UFA's - Markov and Souray re-signed at what I estimate it will take (and not saying I would do this but if BG is serious on re-signing them, then I think it will take Kaberle like money for Markov and a level below McCabe type money for Souray)

Andrei Markov $4,500,000.00
Sheldon Souray $5,500,000.00
TOTAL $10,000,000.00

(4) Team Total with above: $40,447,300.00 - This means $7 million to play with, assuming a $48 million cap, plus, everytime wants to leave a little wiggle cap room come playoff time.

I hope my salary estimates for the RFA's and UFA's are a little high but not sure. So, this leaves the team as:

Kovalev-Koivu-Ryder
Higgins-Plekanec-Kostitsyn
Perezhogin-XXX-XXX
Begin-Lapierre-Latendresse
Murray

Markov-Komisarek
Souray-Streit
Bouillion-Dandenault
Gorges

Huet
Halak

So What do to now?
(1) Well, I still see the defence as a weakness on the team, even with the re-signing of Markov and Komisarek. So, I would like to see the Habs target a top UFA d-man still. So, let's say the Habs somehow sign Kimmo Timonen, a 32 year old d-man in his prime who earned $2.3 million this past season. I suspect it would take about $4.5 million to get him. So, the Habs cap now is at $44,947,300.00. Not much wiggle room left.

(2) The only other thing I can think of is something like the following:
(a) Trade Francis Bouillion for a late draft pick to try and get his salary off the books. If this works then the Habs cap hit is now $43,072,300.00
(b) Demote Garth Murray - if he is picked up on waivers then thats ok. If not, then play him in Hamilton to save the Cap space. So, now the Cap hit is $42,447,300.00
(c) Move Dandenault to Forward, if need be
(d) Sign a big name UFA centre, like Drury, to a $5 million average salary. This brings the cap hit to $47,447,300.00. But, there is not much wiggle room. And the team would look something like:

Higgins-Drury-Kostitsyn
Kovalev-Koivu-Ryder
Perezhogin-Plekanec-Latendresse
Begin-Lapierre-Dandenault

Markov-Komisarek
Souray-Streit
Timonen-Gorges

Huet
Halak

Is this a better team, I don't know. Is this possible? I don't know. But, given the salaries at hand, Gainey will need to be creative to sign 2 big name UFA's.

If a team like that doesn't make the playoffs, then Carbo would be fired
