I know that to have brière on the team would be awesome but what makes the entire montreal media and population think that he'll sign here? There's at least going to be 5-6 teams after him (if not more). He could also stay in Buffalo. Why would he want to be in a place like Montreal, where he would constantly be under the radar....?

I know that. that's not really an answer. Why would he want to come here and be constantly critisized (sp?) even if he gets 5-6 M a season? Imagine if he has an average season.....20-25 goals, the fans will start saying like they did with everybody else (souray, koivu, kovalev, ryder,....), trade him...
And all of the sudden, in an eye blick, Ryder is the hero of the nation because he got a hattrick against toronto...

Constantly critisized ? I thought the medias were always protecting francophones (well, that's the popular belief on these boards) ?

I can only think of a few guys that weren't critisized and bashed this season by media, fans, rds guys,.. (plekanec, streit, halak, markov). I'm not saying there aren't others but I just can't figure out why brière would sign here and not in another place...apart from that "he was born here" thing....

As for the forward, I know Im dreaming but damn do I think this is a great opportunity to get Lecavalier or Richards from Tampa. The ownership said its trimming payroll and Tampa really cant hold on to their top 3 forever. If not Drury or Smyth imo would better address our problem of grit then Briere would. Then again Shanahan and Gurein would also look good as powerforwards and could also mentor Latendrese.

If only...
I believe that Komi is now ready to be a prime shutdown guy... He really impressed me this year with his progression.

I would rather see us go after a bigger first line centerman....IMO.

We just have to offer him the best contract. He won't accept a smaller salary to come here, but I don't think he would accept a smaller salaray to go elsewhere than Montreal either. Except of course he wants to stay in Buffalo.

About the being under the radar thing, it depends for every athlete. Some hate it, but I'm sure some love the pressure of trying to win in a big market.

Whoa. Since when is Scott Hartnell considered a top line player? He put up decent numbers this year but not really top line stuff. Is this line based on potential performance later in his contract or would you expect him to move right into this role?

While I have opinions on most of the players mentioned in this thread, I have no idea who would be available in a trade or as a UFA. I'll just sit back and react to whatever moves Gainey makes.

He is putting up 20-25 goals on a 3rd line no reason to think his numbers wouldn't improve even more playing with Koivu. Plus he adds a defensive presence and big body who crashes and drives the net he is exactly what the line needs to improve its 5 on 5 play.

Yeah, cause past free agency has proved that Some people need to get it thru there heads that just because a player is born somewhere, it doesn't mean they want to play there.

Only two players? lol we need oh..about 5 or 6 to replace the junk that we have. Management will sign some french guys like Belanger and Dupuis to shut people up but we still won't be better. Sammy, Huet and Kovalev needs to go.

JS Giguere in. Trade for P Bergeron. Maybe try signing Smyth too. A real top goalie and two guys with talents and character.

Why the lack of faith in Huet? He came back to start the biggest game of the year without playing an entire game in a month. Besides which, he actually made several difficult saves. Now, he's not a top goalie in this league, but he is more than capable of stealing several games for the Habs next year. Even if he falters, Montreal has a very capable rookie in Halak that deserves a shot...not to mention plan C which entails Price if neither perform up to snuff.

Goaltending is the least of the Habs' worries.

As for the Bruins trading Bergeron to us...well I hope you were being silly.

Edit: one guy I would have loved to have in Samsonov's stead is Petrov. I really think he could have mustered 50 points this year.

Is there a bigger version of Briere available ?
