Habs Problems :Let's Blame Jeff Shantz...

hey Guys,

I know this may be a little weird but if it wasn't for Jeff Shantz we may not be where we are today, I know that's mos tlikely untrue but still I always have hated the guy since he took out Koivu's knee when he was leading the league in scoring.

Just imagine if Saku wouldn't have taken that knee along the boards at center ice, it's pisses me off everytime I think about it. Saku goes onto win the art ross, has a great last 6 years leading up to now, we win the stanley cup and bobs your uncle.

I know it's crazy but I always joke about it.
If you agree gimme a hell ya!!

Hell yeah!!! I was devastated when that happening, Koivu was playing amazing...I don't know about winning the stanley cup but it would have been nice to have someone in the top 5 in scoring. I can't even think of the last time that's happened.

Damn you Jeff Shantz!!!!

IIRC he had 56 points in 50 games before that hit and was doing great

He was leading the league in scoring after the first half but Lemieux was catching up.

In my humble opinion we should stop living in the past. The present isn't that bad and the future seems promising.

I am pretty sure it was earlier in the year than the 50 game mark since Koivu came back later in that season but never was the same player after...

It was earlier in the season. Koivu ended up playing 50 games after he came back later in the year but never looked the same. He tried and did pretty well but it wasn't like the flying start he had. He also finished with 4 pts in 5 playoff games. If my memory serves me correctly the hot line to start that season was Corson-Koivu-Recchi.

If my memory is good, he was equal to Peter Forsberg with 36 points. I'm not sure about it

Actually... I'm pretty sure it was Paul Kariya and Koivu leading the league in scoring... Forsberg and Sundin were a couple points back I think.

but... yes... damn that shantz

Haha, I thought I was the only one who remembers that it was Jeff Shantz and despises him. Just look at Koivu now...he's awesome...now lets imagine the Koivu that could have been.....

Oh, by the way. It was Forsberg who was up there with him in points. My favorite player has always been Koivu, and my best Friend's was Forsberg, and I remember phoning him up when Koivu got injured...we had a little bet going on. Also, I believe it was about this time of year...in December, if my memory serves me correctly, so that would be about 30 games in.

I've been able to come up with how many points he had (38 pts) when he was injured, but can't find how many games that took place. I don't have time to check on that right now but here's the link for those who are interested:

Don't forget

As much as I'd like to believe that Koivu would have finished in the top 5 , don't forget He was playing with Mr.October (Savage) so it is quite likely that by January his point production would have gone down a bit.

Hmm, wasn't Corson acquired barely a week before that injury? I remember we went from a 3 headed monster at center to only Damphousse in a short period of time.

I am pretty sure it was Savage-Koivu-Rex that was lighting it up.

Koivu's stats at the time of the injury were:

30 games 13 goals 25 assists 38 points.

the game was Dec. 7th against Chicago, a game the habs won 3-2. The injury happened in the third period with Koivu scoring his (unlucky) 13th earlier in the game.

Oh yeah, Marc Bureau, Martin Rucinsky, Dave Wilke & Valeri Bure were also hurt in that game, although not all were major injuries.

You're right. It was Savage not Corson. My mistake. Oops.
