Andrei Markov

Sorry, question was misleading. Between those two, I'd say Smyth.

Smyth = short term deal
Briere= longer term deal.

My choice would be Smyth though he brings that grit I wish the Canadiens had.

My thoughts too. Maybe he could help Higgins become that type of player? Or would that hold Higgins back because Ryan would get all the minutes that type of player would use? Or maybe you can't have too many of those types!

Clearly a defencemen... We can fill up the hole in offense, maybe sign one player but at defense they suck. We need someone who can make a tape to tape pass not tape to board to shoulder to ice to other team tape.

Smyth is going to sign some big deal and perenially be the guy that everyone "expected more out of". He's just not worth $5.5 or $6 million dollars per season.

Of the two, I'd rather have Briere, but I have my doubts about how well Briere would play in a defensive system -- if we don't change the current system.

Smyth is exactly what this team needs. A Smyth - Koivu - Ryder line is a pretty good 1st line if you ask me. With Ryan, no longer would Saku have to be the one that goes deep into the zone and corners and get his body mangled, nor would he have to be the one in front of the net on the PP. That gives Saku two 30 goal scorers to play with, as opposed to just Ryder and a defenceman shifted to forward (no offence to Streit, but thats not a 1st line).

Briere is a talented player, no doubt, but he is small, this team needs grit. Not only that, but he wouldn't have wingers to play with on this team. We'd have to stick him with what, Perezhogin and Latendresse? Gui could compliment him, but he's still young and inconsistant.

Now that's an exageration.... like our D's passes could come even come CLOSE to our players, let alone actually hit them

Nice analysis. That's why I agree he'd be perfect on a short term deal.

Smyth won't sign in Montreal anyway, he'll probably go back to Edmonton. So there's no need for Gainey to try really hard to get him and pass up Briere.

I have no idea if Briere wants to come to MTL either, but it seems more likely than Smyth.

He will not be going back to Edmonton. They insulted him by not meeting his demands, as unreasonable as that seems, and by moving him from his family. Now that he's experienced playing somewhere else, I'm sure he'll sign where the money is, and it won't be in Edmonton, that's for sure.

I'd agree that it's more likely Briere comes to MTL.

That's exactly what I believe. Brière is lethal deep in the offensive zone, not waiting at the blue line. The one man forecheck is exactly not the type of system that Brière can thrive in. If we ever get a great centerman, we would need to revampe our offensive pressure system.

As far as I have seen in the last decade, defense as always been a priority. Maybe it will change, but I would have to see it to believe it.

I don't like Briere so I would say Smyth on a 3 year deal.But then again,IMO Ryan Smyth is not a superstar

Scott Gomez. If I had to choose from the options you gave, I'd sign Smyth.

Timonen >>> Souray

Timonen is more of a Markov then Souray. Timonen is good at defence, he's a leader and well it could make Koivu happy since they are both finnish.

Timonen is a lot better then Souray and wll probably cost less.
