Anton Babchuk

What would it take to acquire him?

Is he a stay at home d-man or a puck moving offensive dman?

What needs does Carolina have this offseason?

Anton Babchuk at this point is whatever the head coach needs him to be. He has shown offensive flair that could be advanced provided it was what the team needed and he has shown a defensive accumen that could be honed should the system require that he do so. With Carolina, he as among the league's leading shot blockers at the time of his demotion to the AHL. He has a huge frame, but doesn't play a very physical game. He's more of a finesse defenseman who is very active with his stick and tends to shy away from the rough stuff.

He has an absolute cannon of a shot that is very inaccurate, but an effective weapon nonetheless. He skates very well for a player his size, but he is prone to breakdowns in coverage at times. He needs a lot of icetime to really get into the flow of a game, which is why he's virtually useless to a team on a bottom pairing. The longer the game goes, the better Babchuk plays.

Carolina has needs at 3rd line center and overall organizational depth at every concievable position. That's why they were looking for a draft pick at the deadline. Rumor has it that nobody was biting on a 2nd rounder, so an early 3rd or a 3rd line scorer should do the trick.

Babchuk and Lavi have personal issues and unless they will be able to find common ground (e.g. Bachuk to play in main roster next season) Babchuk is going to leave this team even if that means going back to RSL.

Do you have a link to a reliable source regarding this or is this based on your opinion?

This was taken from an earlier post about Babchuk's future:

Quote:
Is it plausable that Babchuk will see some action in the near future? I ask because this recent blurb[1] had him proclaiming, or at least threatening, that he will sign an RSL contract for next season. The translated quote is as follows:

- I am not yet completely certain, what will happen to me come next season. This summer I become a restricted free agent. Then I will see, where to continue working. During the offseason I, as usual, will go home. And, most likely, sign a contract with an RSL club. I am not happy with the progression of my career in Carolina. I want to play, not to wear out my pants by sitting on the bench.
Here's the link, but it's in Russian.

I would be very susprised if Babs is back with Carolina next year. It will only be if they can't move him.

Here's the translation form Babel Fish. Figure it out as best you can.

Recently defender Anton babchuk was again caused to the composition of "Carolinas" out of the pharm- club. However, the acting possessors of Stanley's goblet thus far hold our player in the reserve, without letting out to ice. The correspondent of "Soviet sport" in the role Dmitriy MANAKHOV met with Babchukom. - thus far I do not know accurately that with me it will be in the following season, shared with plans Anton babchuk. - in summer I become ogranichenno free agent. Then we look, where to work further. In interseason 4, as usual, I will arrive home. And, probably, I will sign contract with the club super-leagues. Me it does not arrange, as is added my career in "Carolina". I want to play, but not to sit through pants on the bench.

He has already signed the contract (1year) with Avangard Omsk (RSL).

Do you have a link to this one? Any idea if there is a release clause?

with it being a one year my bet is that it has a release clause. Not a good sign though, odds are he'll be traded at the draft at this rate.

Hell. Might be the best thing for the kid. Let him play at home for a year and get as much icetime as his heart desires and come back ready to play next season. There isn't any more room for him this season than there was last season provided Wesley comes back and we're able to lure a high caliber defenseman via free agency. It may in fact be the best thing for his development with all things considered. If we can't assure him he will have a spot in the NHL, knowing he isn't a fan of the AHL, why bring him back to put him in a situation where he is unhappy?
