Nice play by Backstrom.
I pretty much missed it, feed cut out right as they scored. Saw part of the replay, will have to wait for the between period highlights

4 - 2 Sweden. Backstrom w/ a secondary on a PPG

Came down the left side with a defender on him. passed to over to Steen who shot, Hedstrom put in the rebound

edit: IIHF.com doesn't list Backstrom w/ an assist, but I heard it over the PA

Sweden up 4 - 2 after 2

the Steen - Backstrom - Hedstrom line appears to be working

Edit: 6 - 4

Sweden wins 7 - 4. I'm still saying it was a 2 point night for Backstrom (still not sure why they aren't giving him an A on the 4th goal)

I wonder why he isn't getting that 2nd assist. From all reports it sounded like he should have.

have no idea, unless a Slovakian player (or two) touched it after Steen shot it? Confusing. Probably his best game so far (that I've seen), created some chances & some nice passes.

Will agree with what others have said, skating does need some work. He isn't slow, but could use some work on his explosiveness/first step

Explanation for why Backstrom wasn't credited w/ an assist

http://www.washingtoncaps.com/news/n...?story_id=4816

Quote:
...On that play, Backstrom gained the offensive zone with the puck and waited for his trailing winger (Alex Steen) to gain the line. He fed a pass to Steen, who fired on goal. Slovakian goaltender Karol Krizan made a pad save, but the puck came right back to Steen. He casually dished it across the crease to linemate Johan Hedstrom, who wristed it into an empty net.

In the NHL, Backstrom would have been credited with an assist on that play. In IIHF play, apparently that’s not the case

Hedström was exactly what the Steen - Bäckström line needed. He doesn't ask any questions, is a very good skater and shoots when he gets the chance.

Hedström played for Anaheim in NHL last season - a very good season on top of that, but had to return home for personal/family reasons.

It's pretty clear Bäckström wants players on his line that want to shoot and skate hard to get the opportunity. Both Steen and Hedström crashed the net and Bäckström gave them the puck.

On a sidenote, it's pretty sick how every change BÅG does to his team, works perfect. B-Å has talent for coaching. First European coach in NHL, coaching Washington?

Didn't see anyone talk about Clark's injury....

"Although the Americans are relatively healthy, they are downgrading Washington Capitals winger Chris Clark's status. Originally, Clark (hyperextended knee) was expected to be able to play against the Finns.

"That may be an aggressive timeline," Johannson said. "He's day-to-day. Obviously we won't put him in a precarious position.""

Apparently he thinks he'll be fine. Just bruised. According to the interview on the Caps Worlds site anyway.

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Clark is a line that maximizes everyone's talents. I really hope we see it.

No, that line would only maximize Clark's talent.

You are probably right that there is a better player out there then Clark, but a player in Clark's mold seems perfect for the 3rd spot on that line. He doesn't carry the puck too much, he shoots when he gets the chance, he hits, and he can play in the defensive side of the ice.

Clark is one of the better guys in the league with all of those attributes and I hope to see him on that line.

I, for one, would love to see that. But Gus was always one of my favorite players, as well as being a standup human being. Can Hanlon, bring Gus over!

BTW when did he become Bengt-Ake? He was just Bengt when he was here.

BTBTW he wouldn't be the first European coaching in the NHL. I think that was Ivan Hlinka, who was coach of the Penguins a few years back

That's basically it. Backstrom loves carrying and dishing. Ovechkin has no problem shooting 10+ times a game. Clark is willing to eat the punishment in the crease and fight for those Ovechkin rebounds.

They're tailor made for each other.

Backstrom to the 2nd line. CAPS need to get a center for AO.

who do you think that center should be? Forsberg, Thornton? I don't really know who is in the Caps range that likes to be the setup man. Maybe Nylander?

Neither do I, I would guess they will try to go after Gomez or Drury, I doubt Foppa would come to DC.
