Drazenovic Inks Deal With Blues by PG Cougars

Cougars forward Nick Drazenovic has signed a 3 year, entry-level NHL contract with the St. Louis Blues.

In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Drazenovic, chosen in the 6th Round (171st overall) in the 2005 NHL Draft, recorded 18 goals and 32 assists in 58 games played this past season. In 15 playoff games, the Cougars Assistant Captain tallied 9 goals (3 GWG) and 10 assists for 19 points

Aaltonen signed with Kärpät today (3 years), and has a 1 year "non-NHL" clause on the deal. I don't know what the &%¤# it means, but it was said he can't move to NHL team during 2007-2008 season. I guess he can sign with STL tho.

Weird contract, since all the details are still in the myst...

He's there now for fitness testing. Does he go straight to the NHL or Peoria?

He'll probably participate in whatever offseason plan the Blues have, then go to training camp in September and then to Peoria unless he wows the Blues brass in camp. (That would not be a bad thing - the Blues would rather have to make difficult choices on keeping guys on/off the roster than watch him twice in practice and ink "PEORIA" next to his name.)

Cross Ryan Reaves off the "To-be-signed" list...

Good news. Kana and Hellstrom officially signed. Also an official announcement from the Blues on Draz and Reaves. The only thing I'm even a bit concerned with is that in Jackson and Gauthier haven't been signed yet and a lump announcement of signings was announced today.

When a prospect is signed... does that mean he'll be in Peoria or will he still stay in his home country for another couple years?

Well, Soderberg is signed but was "loaned" back to his home country when he didn't make the team out of camp last season...so really either with Peoria more likely.

Hellstrom, from his comments sounds like he wants to be in Peoria. Kana-I wouldn't rule him out for making it up to the big team next season depending on what we do in free agency

I really don't see Kana making the big club out of the gate.

I don't see him making the team out of camp either. However, I think it's probable that we see him called up due to injury/suspension by the end of the season. After all, both Backes and Schwarz (both high picks like Kana) spent some time with the Blues in their first full seasons after signing with the Blues. Kana's game also translates pretty well to the NHL level, so I think that we'll catch a glimpse next year and he may even stick like Backes.

At this point I think Birner would get a shot before Kana.

Drazenovic turns 21 in January of 2008, so he is not eligible to play in the WHL next season.

Also, I *think* Kana could play in Owen Sound (OHL) next season if that's what player and club wanted, but I'll try to confirm that if nobody else know's for sure.

I agree that Kana may need more time to develop his body and get used to the North American game (the language, and living here) before getting a trial with The Blues in The NHL. Peoria will be well-stocked with forwards even without him. One year with a Canadian juniors team might not be a bad idea. Then, one year later, he can be undisturbed in working on his game at Peoria, and after 1/3-1/2 year, may be able to stick with The NHL club (as Backes did).
