Confirmed, continuing the trend of trades involving players involving the Eagles.

I don't mean to be a jerk but I kind of object. A 16th rounder straight up for a 22nd? That's not even close. The only way this works out is if both parties acknowledge Lehman and Heller are mostly irrelevant, and then why did you pick them?

In this case it's that both parties acknowledge that Lehman was far beyond a steal as a 22nd rounder. In ATD 6 he went 472nd, this time he went 614th, there's absolutly no justification for the drop. He's better than many backups taken.

I agree he was definitely a steal, I was debating between him and Hap Holmes (and one or two others) when I took Holmes, he should have gone earlier.

To me, it is sort of a pointless roster spot in a format where injuries can't really occur. I think 2 assistant coach choices make more sense in this format than a 3rd goalie.
I've always had the same opinion and have lobbied to get rid of the 3rd string goalies since the 3rd draft, but to no avail. They serve no purpose, and how many Cup winners have gone through 3 different goalies in their playoff run? How many have even carried a 3rd on their active roster? The only real reason to take a good 3rd goalie is to prevent other teams from getting him as a back-up.

Is Astrom the concensus worst starter of all-time? I was thinking of taking Lefty Wilson, the Red Wings trainer who played 3 games for 3 different teams when their starters went down (back when teams didn't even have back-ups). He does have a career GAA of 0.74

Not sure. It only came to mind because I was at a buddy's house in ON last week and he saw me checking in on the ATD thread and said that he would love an Astrom jersey and that I should take him as my 3rd goalie since he would never see action anyway. I concurred but then decided that some might view it as some sort of disgrace and seeing as how I have had mucho funno participating this go round and look forward to future ones, I did not want to do anything that might be misconstrued.

Although that doesn't rule out the 0-29 career record of the immortal Michel Belhumeur!

It's kind of funny because I made this deal because of you Sather. You pointed out to me two things that really needed to be changed about my team. First you confirmed my fear that I have the worst goaltending in the draft. So I went out and got a goalie. With Lehman and Henry I have a 2 and 2a kind of situation to help me get into the playoffs with Cheevers only having to play 50ish games.

Heller is great, but you pointed out that I don't really have any purely offensive defencemen. You were the one who was wondering who I would put on the point while on the pp. GBC seconded. So I need to go shopping now for a guy to do that and while doing so I needed to free up a roster spot. It was either Heller or Van Impe, and I wanted to hold on to Van Impe because I like having multiple guys from great teams and since I had Leach...well you know the rest.

So if you object to the trade you have yourself to thank because you made me second guess my team.

Hardy Astrom is most certainly not the worst goalie of all time. His reputation is due to the way Don Cherry slagged his play for the Rockies in his book. Cherry makes him out to be horrible, but doesn't explain why he gave such a "terrible goalie" far more starts than the other Rockie goalies. Astrom was also the goalie who in `78 with the Rangers, beat Montreal to end their then-record 28 game unbeaten streak.

As far as making a joke selection for your third goalie, I thought one of the third goalie picks last draft was a little strange.

How about Steve Buzinski? I'd do it to have the greatest nickname in hockey on my team.

Would those who haven't voted yet please do so. This is a lot of fun. Good debate while waiting for picks. Nice work, Eagle.

Steve "The Puck Goes In-ski" Buzinski? You can't go wrong with a name like that.

Elvi seems to have left the building and not returned, so since the 9 hours are up and I'm going to make my pick. Bit of an unproven player at the NHL level, but based on his WHA record his talent is undeniable. So he's worth taking as a 13th forward if my team hits a scoring slump and needs a spark offensively. Buffalo selects Andre Lacroix.

For my vote on this goalie thingy, as most of you know I think Jacques Plante is the greatest goalie ever (Outsider explained why perfectly), but I'd rate Hasek a very close second. Plante is higher by a slim margin, a slim like Karen Carpenter margin. So maybe add 0.52 votes to Plante and 0.48 votes to Hasek.

For the goalie...
Roy and Plante are close for 1-2 spot.

Hask and Sawchuck are close for 3-4 spot, and there's a somewhat significant gap between 1-2 and 3-4.

I have a problem with people putting him down near #10, or even lower, but not with him not being #1. I do find it hard to decide exactly where he should rank, but I would certainly rate him a contender.
