If Briere and the Sabres make it to the finals...

...I think it's unlikely that he'll sign with another team over the summer. If the Sabres win the Cup, I would think Briere would be motivated to stay and help them repeat. However, should Buffalo lose in the finals, he may opt to re-sign after having gone so deep in the playoffs with the current Sabres team. Of course I suppose the same could be said of Drury, too.

On another note, any possibility the Flyers would consider swapping Pitkanen, Potulny, and our #2 overall to Florida for Jokinen and the Panthers 1st round pick (#10)? That might be giving up too much, but I'd love to see Jokinen as our #1 center...big, nasty, and a pair of hands to boot. Not a playmaker by any means, but he's certainly worthy of wearing the O and B.

No. It's not that your proposal is bad, but this is something we've gone over ad nauseam. Yes, Jokinen's a first line center (and one of the most underrated players in hockey), but his kind of production can be supplied by a player in the FA market. Pitkanen, on the other hand, has skills that only a select few at his position can duplicate. An offensively dynamite #1 defenseman doesn't come along as often as a first line center who can distribute the puck. I'm just not willing to trade Pitkanen right now (he's still only 23), unless it's for a generational talent or a package that is a severe overpayment and truly knocks my socks off.

I certainly hope not. That's more along the lines of a giveaway. Even if Jokinen was as good as you imagine, the remaining team isn't ready for those kinds of moves.

No. Everything is wrong with that proposal.

Everything? Could you be any less specific?

Not trying to provoke an argument KJ, I just don't understand why you think the proposal is all that horrible. I've certainly read worse proposals on these boards.

Let's just think about Buffalo's situation. Regardless of what the cap amount is, the Sabres can only afford to keep Briere or Drury. If they keep Drury, they're going to have a lot of money tied up in a second line center to play as a first line center. If they keep Briere, they tie up a lot of money in a first line center to play as a first line center. Which one makes sense to you if you're trying to assemble a competative team?

I'd put money on them re-signing Briere, acquiring a true third line center, and going into next season with Roy or Connolly as their second line center. After that, Drury picks up a nice paycheck out west to play for whoever is desperate enough to shell out $5 million+ for a second line center.

-The Flyers aren't trading Pitkanen
-The Panthers just signed Jokinen to a contract extension last year.

Drury must be the best 2nd line center in the game then.

he's never broken 70 pts... nothing against that, but he's simply not an elite offensive player in this league. he's one of my favorite players, but to get in a huff about 2nd line center status with Drury is ridiculous.

Off the top of my head, I'd say that's correct... but he's still a 2nd line center. Yes, he's Captain Clutch and makes the playoffs his own personal playground, but that doesn't change the fact that he's a 2nd line center (and there's nothing wrong with that).

I hope we go after Drury over Briere. He's better overall in my opinion.

Small, soft, diver, captain of the whiniest, most diving team in the league.

A true poster boy for the new NHL.

GKJ, is there anyway we can disallow any and all posts that contain the words: Pitkanen/trade/proposal/swap in the same sentence? I am soooo done with these conversations.

I don't think I can deal with all the "Miller is the best goalie evar" or "Upshall is the best RW in the game" posts.

I am with you. I tried that a long time ago. Something regarding the first amendment or something like that

I say we all protest and just make a pact that any thread comes up mentioning trde Pitkanen, we just ignore the little ******** and not respond. Lets not satisfy their hunger for attention

How much cap room do we have? And I don't see giving Dury $5 million is any hardship for the Flyers, consider we'll probably max out the cap anyways. He might not be a first line center for an elite team, but if you put him between Gags and Knuble, he might be that extra push we need for making the playoffs.

But yeah... no for trading Pika. Maybe the #2 for some where in the top 10 and something else.
