Islanders Snap Road Skid
Comeback gives team first win in D.C. since '97

It was the first time this season the Islanders scored two power play goals in a road game and the first road power play goal in nine games. The goal also ended an overall 0-for-28 stretch.

RECORD: 14-15-2-1 LAST SEASON: 12-15-5-0

PLUS: Excellent effort from a fourth line centered by Oleg Kvasha, with Mattias Weinhandl and Justin Papineau, which recorded a goal and five shots.

PLUS: Alexei Yashin scored his seventh goal in nine games, recorded eight shots and was plus-2.

Snow, late rally help
Islanders power by Caps

"It was a dumb and undisciplined penalty," Stirling said. "You can't do that stuff. ... But Snowy went in and did the job."

DiPietro, visibly upset after the hook, permitted three goals on 12 shots in his first start since Dec.6.

"Anytime you get pulled, you're obviously not happy," he said. "It turned about to be a good call."

ISLANDERS 5, CAPITALS 4
Islanders End Their Skid With Change of Goalies

"This just showed the character we have and nobody's giving up on this team," defenseman Kenny Jonsson said.

"We were very vocal on the bench that the game was far from over," Czerkawski said.

IT'S A SHOCKER IN D.C.

"Dumb," Stirling said of the goalie's interference penalty. "Down 2-1, take a dumb penalty . . . take an undisciplined penalty . . . and then they get it, the game's over. Can't do that stuff. No one's immune. If a defenseman did it, that defenseman would be sitting. The goalie does it, he sits. Snowy went in and did the job."

"Luckily for myself and the team," said DiPietro, who was criticized a day earlier for an on-air shaving-cream prank when Justin Papineau was being interviewed during the first intermission in Philadelphia, "we were able to come back and win the game."

Caps Lead by Two, Let One Get Away
Islanders 5, Capitals 4

"It looked to me like we relaxed after we started leading 3-1," defenseman Sergei Gonchar said. "Unfortunately, our [penalty killers] couldn't kill those two penalties and they scored and that gave them energy going into the third period. In my opinion it's right there, that's where we lost the hockey game -- at the end of the second period."

"It was good just getting the monkey off our back," Islanders Coach Steve Sterling said after his team's first win here in nearly seven years. "We haven't matched up with Washington well."

Caps squander lead against Islanders

"Our start was a little slow and I could sense it," said coach Glen Hanlon, whose record fell to 2-2-2 since taking over. "We just didn't have that real pursuit that we've had for the first five games."

"We took a couple penalties and they have skill players and they scored goals," said Peter Bondra. "Still, the game was on at that point but I believe that early goal in the third got us a little bit down. Obviously, we're disappointed, we should have had a better result. Maybe [we should] play smarter."

Stars GM in attendance: more likely for WASH then NYI. I can't really find a trade match here. They have no young defensemen to return if we move Hammer. Parrish wouldn't get their young talent nor overpaid vets. I would love to obtain Arnott.
