Talks of Gomez got me thinking

Have we signed anyone that was a former Islander/Devil (either directly from one of those teams or the player was a member of said teams at one point) That wasn't a complete bust aside from maybe 1 good season?

Off the top of my head I can think of crappers like:

Vlad malakov
bryan trots
bobby holik
pat lafontaine (injury)
kristov oliwa
kasper (longest run of not sucking though)

There's probably 5 others just in the last 15 years that I'm not thinking of atm and don't have time now to do so.

Only honorable mention I can think of is Shanahan from this category. Though again he's gota do good next year to not get on this list

I think Kaspar is the only guy on your list who went to some sort of cleaning process.
I believe he was traded to pittsburgh and then off to the avalanche.

so he doesnt really belong on that list.

not sure about pat lafontaine though.. wasnt he a sabre when we acquired him?

edit:nevermind maybe i should read your post more carefully, I missed the "at one point"

No.

Gomez coming to the NYR would really make him look like a hypocrite. Unless his only motivation was to spite his GM which doesn't make sense.

I see him going West to be close to home.

Patty La was great for us until Mike Keane ran into him (sort of similar to what happened to Shanny). There was no reason to think he wouldn't have been with us for two or three seasons.

While unspectacular, Bruce Driver was a fairly steady addition to our blueline when he left the Devils. Sort of the Malik of the post-cup years.

Well I guess Kasper had a ok run, it was kind of sad to see him fall off this year.

Pat lafontaine played very well for the Rangers, although not that long, much like Lindros with the head injuries. Patty was in the early 90s the best US born player, the James Patrick hit I think in 91-92 started his head problems.

He wasn't what he was after all those years in NJ, but he added stability to our blueline, and had decent points his first two years, after we traded Zubi. Like I said, he was the Malik of the 90s.

Ray Ferraro was good here. John MacLean was decent. Jeff Toms was God.

Verbeeck: 1 season with 82 points
Ferraro: 1 season 54 points
Jeff Toms: half a season, sucked
Pilon 2 seasons 15 points "ok" D
LaFontaine: was good but again didnt even last a year

Straka and MacLean (kinda) have been pretty much the only exceptions to this and thats like a 5-10% success rate then

My original point is supported though I'd be very very wary at signing someone with an islander/devil history for more then a few years. And I'm sure gomez would like more then 1 or 2 years.

John MacLean was pretty well when he was here, it was Sather running him into the IHL for being too slow.

I was so disappointed when LaFontaine and Keane collided. LaFontaine was very good for a weak Rangers team.

I don't think its some kind of predisposed thing that Ilses/Debbies can't be good Rangers. I think its more based on bad managerial decisions than quality of the players.

Perhaps, but seeing as how strong the rivalries are odds are a lot of the ones that go to the rangers just sign for the money and to be back in the tri-state area not because they all of a sudden love the rangers.

K so far we got 2 people (straka/maclean) that produced well for a timespan longer then 1 year. and none for 3 years+

I'd catagoraize that as a trend moreso then a coincidence, regardless of the reasons behind each individual.

so yea.... please no 5+ year gomez contracts
