I hope you're right, but at WC tournament he wasn't in top30 and his FO% was under 48. My guess is that the level of players is higher in national games and that's why he didn't do as well as in SEL.

I'd be happy with 10 goals and 30-40 assists. That's probably where it'll end up.

I don't expect an Ovechkin like rookie season, though most around here did not expect that when it happened. The bigger thing for me is how much better will Semin or Ovechkin be with Backstrom on their line or on the PP?

Well, I'm talking about on the Caps. Not league wide

I think Tomppav was just saying that it's harder to get a high faceoff percentage against better faceoff men.

According to DN.se (in swedish of course) they have now agreed on all parts of the contract and Bäckstrom will sign it in DC within two weeks.

No change really, just that the agent now confirms that have agreed on everything.

agreed and agreed.

also, watching these playoffs, it is painfully obvious that the Caps simply cannot maintain control of the puck like the elite teams - no puck possession = chasing on D = penalty situations = puck in yer own net.

i think NB will be a solid contributor from the get go and will help this team a ton with puck possession.

Wow, I stay away from the net for a couple of days and look what I miss!

NB's numbers next year: 20g, 40-50a

I'll bet he gets around 100 points. Look at what he did in a more defensive league. He'll play on a line with a true sniper and a power play with two snipers. The only real question is if he'll be a minus player with 100 points.

I am going with 18 goals, 43 assists for a total of 61 points. Ovechkin and Semin have spoiled us with their production in their first full years. But 61 points for a rookie is a season I will be very happy with.

It's tough to predict what Backstrom will do next year since his precise role on the team isn't yet clearly defined. Assuming the Caps do end up adding a capable center for the first line over the summer (which is by no means guaranteed but certainly necessary), I think Backstrom will put up 12 goals and 43 assists. If no significant talent is added at center then he'll get every chance to exceed those numbers and then some.

I love the Backstrom pick. I think he's gonna be a good/great player for the Caps. I am somewhat skeptical about his goal-scoring ability and that worries me. But then, Chris Clark was not known as a goal scorer until he started taking shifts with AO. If Backstrom and AO have good chemistry then Backstrom could have a lot of tap ins. He has to be a better goal scorer than Zubrus.

From all accounts, his shot isn't great. But I think that is more along the lines of a pass first, deke and then pass second, and then shoot if I really had too type of approach.

With the open ice he should see away from Semin/Ovechkin, if he shoots some, he should get goals.

I see a lot of Wayne Gretzky in Backstrom's game...esp. in the first of half of this season. His vision and ability to maintain possession is world-class. But, damn it, if he doesn't shoot the puck he will cut his effectiveness in half. You have to be willing to shoot the puck as a center. Sometimes, believe it or not, the puck will go in the net. Even more, the next time down the ice the D men have to give your linemates a little more ice because they don't know if you'll shoot or pass. Gretzky was the master of this. I hope Backstrom understands it and I hope his coaches understand it.

I think it will take 2-3 years for him to hit his stride, and he will peak in his early 30's. Thats like 10 years away.

People shouldn't expect miracles next year but I think he could play the 2:nd line, and I suspect he will concentrate on his defensive game first.

FYI these are incompatible for the current Caps team. The 2nd line doesn't know the word defense. We just expect them to keep their damn hands off the puck.
