Pronger I agree is a bargain, but that's an odd ball situation with all the injuries, etc ...
Rob Niedermeyer looks good for the $2.25 million in the playoffs this season.

its too bad he didnt take a big hometeam discount...
Ohlund could have gotten over 5 a while ago..but he signed for 3.5...

Maybe Markov could have gotten .5-1.2 million more as a ufa.. 5.75 isnt a big steal......its just fair.

I don't see how it sucks for the league. Montreal didn't pay more than Markov would have gotten on the open market, and quite possibly a little bit below. Maybe it "set the market", but it was not a function of Gainey overpaying, more a function of what the market will bear for Markov's class of player.

The only way it hurts the league is that it increases demands for what few top-tier D-men remain.

In all honesty, I'd offer him up to 6.75 million per year if I were the Habs. Why? Without Markov:

Souray (IF he re-signs)-Streit
Bouillion-Dandenault
Gorges- O'Byrne
Cote

Beauchemin, two years (past this one) at $1.65 million per. Sign those d-men early, children!

Same way Markov has been playing as a #1 D-man for 2 years now at around 2 million. Great bargain while it lasted, but eventually, it costs a lot.
