In terms of MAKING THE FINALS in 2004, how do these teams rate at mid-season?

Ottawa - Contender

Philadelphia Contender- but iffy with hackett and Esche

New Jersey Contender

Colorado Contender but iffy with Aebischer

Dallas Pretender. Another one of those years for Dallas

Detroit Contender, assuming they keep the right goalie (whichever one that is)

St. Louis Osgood Plus Playoffs equals pretender

Los Angeles Cechmanek plus Injuries = Pretender

San Jose Pretender

Anaheim Contender, but only if Giggy gets moving

Calgary Pretender

Montreal Pretender

Atlanta Pretender -- Not enough defensive play to win in the playoffs

Vancouver Cloutier Plus Playoffs equals Pretender

Tampa Bay Contender

Nashville Pretender - Not enough depth. Vokoun hasn't been in the playoffs before.

Minnesota Pretender

NY Rangers Pretender

NY Islanders Pretender

Boston Contender, though I'm not sold on Raycroft.

Toronto Contender

1. Toronto: Some top end talent and a good goalie.

4. Ottawa: Talent out the ears.
Heh. "Some"?

Toronto is easily as talented as Ottawa.

Good point. Even better if you add Hasek to the list.

No team is as talented as the Sens are, let alone the Leafs.

On paper.. (which is where a lot of people here seem to think things are won and lost), quite a few teams are as talented as the Sens. The only difference is that the talented players on the Sens are younger which would give them the advantage. But to say the Sens are gods gift to the nhl is silly.

His comments were sarcastic in nature.

Merry Christmas everyone! (that's not sarcasm)

I don't think anyone can say that the Sens "stink" but they sure look a heck of a lot more beatable than people were making them out to be.
It hasn't been bad. The Florida OT win, Ottawa had over 40 shots to Florida's 20 or so, which would have been a blowout had it not been for Luongo. The Buffalo tie was the 3rd game in 4 nights (and the second of a back to back). And, we DID storm back to tie it, after being down 2-0.

They are still having a bit of trouble with the tight games (the two losses, both were by one goal, and the one to NJ was particularly bad). But, we did go 7-2-2 with out starting goalie out quite a bit with the Flu, and the backup out with Back Spasms (the third string goalie, Emery got one of the W's). Lalime had 5 of the starts, Prusek 5 and Emery 1. Lalime is finaly getting back into form, which will do nothing but good for the team.

Were finally starting to play well at home (the road record is 2nd in the league, on a PPG basis), the special teams are killer (4th best PP AND 4th best PK). The goal differential is second in the league to only Detroit. The team is coming around, the numbers support the talent level on the team, they just need to get their confidence back a bit, which is coming (the OT win will do wonders).

Add Hasek.
And remember, Detroit was the leagues best team for just about all of Osgood's tenure, yet whenever they got eliminated, it was with Ozzie getting terribly outplayed by the other goalie.
That is a fact.
That is why every Wings fan in the world (except those with a crush on Ozzie) cheered when Ozzie left town.
Ozzie is the main reason this team didn't win more often.

Funny how Blues fans love to sing Ozzie's praises. Yet when Ozzie was the Wings goalie, they never failed to point out our weakness in net.
