Contract News

Contract news from the OC Register today. I think the only "new" item is on Parros.

In a May 25 move intentionally flown under the radar as they began preparations for the Stanley Cup Finals, the Ducks announced the signing of coveted Swiss-born goalie Jonas Hiller to a one-year, entry-level contract heavily laced with performance-bonus clauses.

Although the Ducks have yet to make any announcements, they have reached agreement on two-year contracts with left wing Travis Moen and heavyweight right wing George Parros.

Of the 29 players on the Ducks' playoff roster, 15 are signed at least through next season. Salary-cap figures are in parentheses:

Signed through 2007-08

G Ilya Bryzgalov ($1.181 million)
LW Chris Kunitz ($1.056 million)
C Ryan Carter ($850,000)
C Ryan Getzlaf ($739,700)
LW Drew Miller ($652,500)
RW Corey Perry ($614,300)

Signed through 2008-09

D Scott Niedermayer ($6.75 million)
C Todd Marchant ($2.518 million)
RW Rob Niedermayer ($2 million)
D Francois Beauchemin ($1.65 million)
C Samuel Pahlsson ($1.4 million)
LW Travis Moen (TBA)
RW George Parros (TBA)

Signed through 2009-10
D Chris Pronger ($6.25 million)
C Andy McDonald ($3.33 million)

Unrestricted free agents

D Joe DiPenta
G Jean-Sebastien Giguere
C Mark Hartigan
D Ric Jackman
LW Brad May
RW Joe Motzko
D Sean O'Donnell
RW Teemu Selanne
RW Shawn Thornton

Restricted free agents

Think we'll keep Jacman? I want to, but I get the feelin that Carlyle hates him (could all be over speculation).

Great news about Moen and Parros. Two key players. And of-course the Hiller signing could prove to be a very important one.

excluding giggy and teemu, who do you guys think we really need to sign.
I'd like to see Penner for sure and everyone one else I can see as being just descent/replacable... (I not too up to date on the Rookies though)

Doesn't Chris Kunitz's contract run longer than 2008? He signed a two-year contract on July 16, 2006, and signed a two-year contract extension on March 8, 2007.

I think there are many guys who have more potential. I think Ric could be good if he had more strength, but I could see him as Prongers partner if he got a better work ethic. But there are alot of other potential guys like Tanabe out there.

There was an announcement of Kunitz' extension on March 8, but someone subsequently realized that the CBA only permits extensions to be signed in the last year of a current contract. The news release quietly disappeared, at least from most places. I suppose this means he is ready to be signed after July 1, when this year of his contract ends, and the last year begins.

I concur, any of the others shown as RFAs/UFAs above can be readily replaced for their talent. Some are reasonably priced right now, however, so they're valuable in the sense that they're OK and might be hard to replace for their price (e.g., O'Donnell).

I think Penner is relatively safe; most RFAs don't go wandering.

I believe Andy McDonald's contract ends after 08-09. He signed a three year contract which started this year. After the 08-09 season, the Ducks are going to have to reload the entire team.

You are correct. McDonald is on contract for 07-08 and 08-09.

we are keeping most of our key players for at least a few more seasons which I'm really happy about.

As for the free agents this year..I'd really like to see Jackman, Giggy and O'Donnell get resigned.

A bit off topic but I read today that Ryan would be slated for the 'top' line if Selanne retired.

Well, he'd be on the second line, as Getzlad, Perry and Penner would takeover the top line and AnyMac and Koonie on the second with who ever should Teemu hang them up.

I don't know that.
However, based on my knowledge and my digestion of reports that I've received on Ryan, I would be surprised to see him with the team on a full time basis next year, let alone in a top line role.
Anaheim has never pencilled prospects into roster spots, instead making them earn it, as was seen with Getzlaf, Perry and especially Penner. They take the slow approach with their prospects and I can't expect they'd change that focus with a player like Ryan.
I don't think it's anything new to hear that Anaheim would like Ryan to eventually replace Selanne's offensive production. But for all parties involved, I think everyone has their fingers crossed that Selanne will want to return for another season.

No one will be able to replace Selanne's 48 goals. This team needs him back if we have any chance to repeat. Its not only the goals on the ice, its the overall package Selanne delivers to the organization.

Bobby Ryan is only 20 years old. Lets give the kid a full pro year in the AHL allowing him to play in critical situations and lead the team down there in Portland. Brian Burke seems to have a lot of faith in the kid so I'm sure he's going to get a chance with the BIG club eventually.
