Leafs Trying to Poach from Wings' Organization?

I had a good chuckle when I read that the Leafs want to bolster their front office. Apparently Bowman met with Peddie to discuss things, but Scotty says he has no interest in going anywhere else. The report from the Toronto Sun also mentions that the three guys the Leafs are interested in are Bowman, Holland and Nill! `Poachers.

My favorite quote is this: It has become clear to some that the Leafs' hockey IQ -- to twist an old Peddie basketball quote -- needs to be increased.

Go steal Burke away from Anaheim. He's a true hockey genius....

Quote:
"If you bring in Scotty Bowman, you're bringing maybe as good a hockey guy as there is in the world," Red Wings senior vice-president Jimmy Devellano said.

Devellano said he was "not aware" the Leafs had asked for permission to talk to Bowman, but others say Leafs had interest in Bowman, general manager Ken Holland and assistant GM Jim Nill.

Bowman, who is under contract to Detroit, says he is happy being part of its inner-circle.

"I'm set with Detroit," said the 73-year-old Bowman, who has won nine Stanley Cups as a coach, all of them since 1973.

"I like the team. I like the job. The Red Wings know my position. I told them, if anyone calls (for permission to talk), tell them I'm not interested."

Can't blame them for trying. Toronto should inquire as to the availability of Crosby while they're at it.

Yikes! I dunno I'm kinda scared... Bowman has a history of giving misinformation to the press...

I find it funny that the owners of the Toronto Maple Leafs had to "learn" how to run a first class sport organization...

Both Devellano and Kenny Holland were not aware that the Leafs were given permission to talk to Bowman. (i.e. They didn't have permission)

Leafs president Richard Peddy would not deny that the meeting in Buffalo took place when he was directly asked about it by the media....

So what kind of compensatory pick will the Leafs be forking over for tampering?

Can the Wings nab a 2nd rounder or so from this or what?

I remember not too long ago New Jersey I think lost a first to Washington for a similar situation that happened with Scott Stevens.

At least they have exceptional taste in hockey talent when it's time to raise the hockey IQ. (Devellano is even a Toronto native!)

They're our Canadians and we're keeping all of them! (hopefully)

They may just be saying that to the media. I'm sure these guys all know each other really, really well. Scotty's title is "Consultant" so I doubt that qualifies under the usual management rules.

That's funny. I'm surprised they didn't try to consult Sobotka.

I would imagine Bowman's job as "consultant" being pretty sweet.

Yeah, Scotty pretty much creates his own workload from what I understand. He's allowed to reside in Florida and serves as an Eastern Conference scout of sorts, but he's got no official responsibilities. And I'm sure the money is nice too.

Should we be surprised? We feel or have felt this way too. But, T.O. has never had a mind of their own. What to do in the 1990's? Maybe get Cliff Fletcher since he brought the Flames the '89 cup. Cliff Fletcher then immediately acquires Gilmour.

Ken Dryden.
Darcy Tucker.
Brad Brown.
Jyrki Lumme.
Shayne Corson.
Kirk Muller (from NYI)

That's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more examples. Leafs, always looking for winning solutions from you guys or us or wherever.

And, remember Larry Murphy.

Very fondly. Leafs fans need to start booing Kaberle so we can get him for a similar type of deal.

Kaberle on the wings would be a very nice fit... perhaps we can engineer a trade before the Maple Leafs get a hockey IQ anywhere close to whats in Colombus, Ohio

So it appears pretty official that the Leafs were talking to Bowman. Any news yet on if they got permission? This might be a big bullet for Detroit to use against the Leafs as leverage for a vote for a move to the East and a new schedule.
