I say Calgary is most surprising as one of the upper echelon teams...the ducks and stars are too, but in a negative way...

We are closer at the half way mark then 1/3rd. That said, I agree with your choices.

I agree with Calgary. Yes I am a Leafs fan and I do think the Leafs have surprised me as well. Its hard to believe that MY team is doing so well. Hasn't hit me yet but Calgary, number one surprise.

I am not surprised at all by the ducks poor play. It was expected, the honeymoon is over.

Flames, Sens, Stars, Sharks, Leafs, and the Thrashers have been surprising, based on the standings.

I said they had a legit shot at making the playoffs and was pretty much ***** in terms of the strong content of words by a fellow Canucks fan.

While I hate the flames there is a certain sense of satisfaction at this turn of events.

The Thrashers for me. They really stepped it up and showed their good play at the end of last year was no mere "new coach honeymoon". They are playing as a team, and I find it admirable. (I'd of course prefer it if they'd back off, but they aren't showing signs of it so far )

Considering all the injuries that the Wings and the Kings have been through, I'm surprised that both of them are doing as well as they are. I'm also surprised and impressed by Atlanta.

On the down side, I'm surprised at Dallas and Boston...Boston started out so good, and then they tanked...Dallas never really got out of the gate.

I'm more surprised that Calgary's winning with the ****storm of injuries we've been through. Our top goalie has been out the season, our top defenseman Lydman has been out for a while, Rhett Warrener has been out at times, and most importantly 3 of our top 4 centers have been out for a freakin' month together! Reinprecht, Conroy and Betts have been out for quite a while and Reinprecht also missed the first month. He was on around a PPG pace.

Other than us I'd have to say Nashville has been a pleasant surprise and so has Atlanta.

For me it's the Flames and the Sharks. Atlanta hasn't surprised me, they were my pick for the 8th seed at the beginning of the season.

Never had any doubt the Ducks would fall off the pace.

The Thrashers do suprise me. I would have figured losing Heatly would have ended their season.

The Flames, of course.

How about Montreal?

Given their injuries I'm amazed more people haven't said the Kings. They've basically been in first place all season, despite half their roster being wiped out at different times so far. Not to mention several key players have been in and out of IR since game 1. The Avatar is for Deader, not the Kings but I have to give them some credit.

So far they've done quite well.

You're right...the Kings currently have 11 guys on the IR (9 actually, Allison and Deadmarsh are listed as non-roster players). With so much fire power out, they've definitely kept the ship afloat. We are seeing some promising careers coming out of this injury situation (Frolov, Cammalleri, Gleason, Brown, well before he got injured). It's good to see the young guys step it up for the Kings... not to mention the veterans doing their jobs (Klatt, Robitaille, Straka, Palffy).

Compared to last year, the Kings had no confidence, they felt sorry for themselves, they didn't believe in themselves... this year Andy Murray has not allowed any of that. Murray has separated the injured guys from the healthy guys to create a more pleasant environment for the healthy players. He's really done a great job with the Kings this year. This is the 2nd straight year he's had to work through these injuries, and he's doing a fantastic job so far this year.
