Now before you start flaming me on how bad he is 1 on 1 and how he can be a defensive liability, you should hear me out first. Sheldon is a big, tough, offensive, and a great leader. Oh ya and he can break the rubber off the puck with his slapshot. Now I realize he isnt good 1 on 1 but every where else he is solid defensively. Put him with a guy like Niedermayer who can get back for him, and we would be that much better. Think about this:
Teams would tremble facing this defence. Though I do have a question, would we have the cap space? Im thinking Giguere would have to go which wouldnt be great, but if there was some way we could fit both Souray and Giguere in with another forward (or Selanne), would you be interested in him?
The best defence consistency ever... But I think he would pay for the Ducks too much.... I think we'd rather take for example Jackman. We nevertheless could take the Cup!
So I've drunk... I'm sorry about some errors in my writing...
No. Plus, he wouldnt get anywhere near the PP time he got in Montreal, and his point totals would take a huge hit. Id rather spend the money on a forward.
HOWEVER
If rumors about Scotty retiring are true, then yeah, Id take him.

Yes, his point total would decline; but having him would definitely be an improvement of our current defensive lines. Going to the PP against the Ducks would be deadly.
It's hard to see what we need without knowing if Selanne will stay or not.
I've never liked Souray very much... Scott should be focusing on the offense instead of backing Souray up. Re-sign O'Donnell and bring Vishnevski back.

Don't mean to harp on you, but why are you so set on seeing former Ducks return to the team? Players move on and I can tell you Vish can get a lot more from other teams than what Burke would be willing to give.
But to the discussion in hand. Souray will go to the highest bidder which won't be us. If Scotty retires, which I think he won't, it probably won't be for at least a month or two. By that time Souray, Rafalski, Hannan, Rivet and Tmmonen will most likely all have been signed. Basically, if Scotty retires he'll wound our d-line pretty bad which is why I don't think he'll do it.

I like this idea. It would be cheaper and I like him more. Keep the top 4 the same. At the same time I wouldn't be too disapointed if huskins was still paired with jackman or dipenta again.
With Pronger and Beauchemin, we don't really need Souray. I like O'Donnell as a #4 Dman but he is definitely overprice as a #5-6 Dman if that is the case.
If we we're looking for a defenseman with good offensive skills but some shortcomings on defense, why don't we re-sign Jackman? He's actually played pretty good for us, can move the puck pretty well, and has a good slapshot for the PP. Best of all, he'd be cheaper.
Souray would fit the Ducks like a glove IMO. Any defiency he has would be offset by Pronger or Niedermayer. Also, he's exactly like Burke likes them, big, tough, full of leadership and willing to drop the gloves anytime his teammates get cheapshotted.
I'd love a guy like Souray on the blueline. If O'donnell doesn't come back, we have lost a lot of toughness from the blueline the past 2 years with Vish, SOB and O'Donnell. He would fit the bill perfectly as he is one of the toughest dmen in the league. Unfortunately we don't have the cap space to sign him if we intend to sign Giggy and Selanne/replacement. He is gonna get ridiculous money this offseason.
I'd look towards Andy Sutton if we can't get O'donnell back for cheap. We have enough firepower from the backend as it is so a shutdown guy like Sutton would be awesome. Sutton is a big, mean guy who isn't afraid to "stir things up". And since the Ducks are already dirty, cheapshotting goons, he'll fit perfectly.
Pronger and Sutton on the 2nd pairing.. just think about the carnage..
Bryz is the same as he ever was. A talented goalie that hasn't demonstrated an ability to carry a starter's load yet. I wouldn't criticize his performance in '06-07. He never really got the playing time necessary to establish a rhythm. He did the job nicely against Minnesota when called upon.
Souray is terrible defensively. And as someone already pointed out, we already have two good point shots in Beauchemin and Pronger. If the wild rumors are true and Scott Niedermayer retires, I'd rather have Timonen or Rafalski.
If Nieds retires i'd like to see us sign two defensemen, no high end guys that'll get more than they are worth. I'd like Pressing he could play with Pronger, and then a stay at home guy so that Beauch can play more offense. I really think Niedermayer is going to retire because this is dragging out so long.
