Growing

I'm 5'11 170 pounds and 17 years old. I have not grown in a while. Is there anything I could do to help get taller ? (eating or not eating certain foods)

You might grow a little taller but probably less than an inch.

Genes decide how tall you'll get. But anyhow, you don't need to be tall and big to become a successful athlete and hockey player, Brian Gionta and Theo Fleury are two good examples. You usually just have to work harder.

Use your size to your advantage, not your disadvantage. Work your ass off to have the best acceleration and skating skills possible. Stickhandling, wrist shot, you name it. And since you're not a Chara, positioning gets more important defensively.

Shoot, most NHL rosters would list Slapshot_11 as 6'1" 200 lbs.

You can't teach size, but as peeps have said above, it doesn't really matter all that much. Use your strengths - you will be able to hip check far more effectively being smaller! You should be faster, more agile etc. The 1st poster will prob grow another inch or two, so you would end up being 6'0 or 6'1 which is pretty average. I'm 6'1 and 175 lbs, pretty skinny for my height but hey, I'm not a professional athlete, I just play recreationally.

If you're a true 5'11'' barefooted you have nothing to worry about. Guys like Sakic/Naslund/Zetterberg/Richards are your height and they dont look small on the ice. Packing on pounds is where your focus should be. Well, also streching - you can stretch your way to another inch or so, its proven.

It's mostly genetics that will determine it. You might be a late bloomer. I was about 5'10" at 17 and then hit a late grownth spurt and ended up at 6'2".

I've seen some weird things though. My grand-parents are probably around 5'3", and I have an uncle that was around 6'3".

After 17 I grew about another inch, so there is a little hope. For many years I was the shortest in my class, but 5'11" isn't so bad.

Most of those NHL roster sizes are inflated anyway. I shook Phil Housley's hand once and that guy was tiny. At the time I was your size, and for Phil to be listed at 5'10" they must have been adding his skates, and possibly his helmet.
