What exactly would you expect his return to be? They gave up a 2nd to get him and a prospect goalie. His value had to have dropped tremendously this year. He couldn't score playing with the best player in the league, he suffered a pretty severe shoulder injury, and he lost his roster spot by the time he recovered.

It wouldn't be worth it for the Pens to give him a qualifying offer to *maybe* get a 5th round pick for him.

Are you talking about Ekman? He's a UFA not an RFA. You can't qualify him.

Who are you talking about? None of the guys listed are RFAs, they're all UFAs. They can't be qualified.

I assumed that's who he was talking about. My bad, I knew he was a UFA just slipped my mind.

Oh, the article made it sound like they were all RFA's

As long as Roberts signs I really don't care what happens to Recchi.

As a Pens fan who had the same opinion of Ekman before he signed with the 'Burgh - and was warned by Sharks fans to temper his expectations - you'd be better off forgetting about him.

He's not very good top 6 material.

I don't know what it was with Ekman. I almost feel like he needs to be the best guy on the line or the worst guy on the line just playing defense a bit. The Pens tried to put him in a place to score with Sid for a minute then bounced him all around. Then that awful injury happened and he never really got a chance. He never settled in and I'm sure it will hurt his stock next year. I think there will be plenty of interest and he'll get a contract close to 2 million, but only a one year deal.

I'm sorry to see Petrovicky go, he just got caught up in the logjam of 3rd & 4th liners.

That will really have an impact on the UFA market, not! All it is is a team getting rid of its garbage. These are fringe players. This kind of thing happens all the time each year.

Scuderi signing with his hometown Islanders is a real possibility. He's got some fans in the front office.

Oh man that'd be funny. Can they sign Melichar as well?

And I think most sensible Pens fans would agree with you. Hope he does well wherever he goes.

246 ga is hardly horrible. an upgrade is definitely needed if the pens want to compete with ottawa and buffalo though.

According to Shero the Penguins #1 free agent priority will be getting a veteran defender to pair with Kristopher Letang. Letang is already been pencilled into the regular line-up and with the team looking for a partner for him...that should officially end the horror of having Josef Melichar as a regular on the Penguins blue-line. At most it looks like he'll be a 7th if retained at all.

And wouldn't Nasreddine be a better fit as the no,7 defenseman, since he has some good leadership skills and is a Therrien loyalist ?

I actually think that Scuderi would be a better choice than either of them for a #7.

Ekman played poorly to start, but he was starting to get better before he got that ugly arm injury. I think he can do well somewhere else.

I woulnd't mind Nasreddine coming back as an extra defenseman, he's a good leader and is well respected in the lockerroom. When he went to visit the Baby Pens' lockerroom before they played the Phantons while he was in Philly for Pens/Flyers game, everyone gave him a standing ovation, including the Edmonton prospects. He did what was asked of him on the ice and played relatively well in his role.

Scuderi isn't as bad as Melichar, some pucks went off of him and into the net as well but not nearly as often. At least when they bounced off of Scuderi he was trying to block shots, in Melichar's case he was just standing there like an idiot when the puck hit off of his skate.

I'm going to miss Petro as well, but he just got caught up in the numbers game. Thorburn is younger and he can play the same role, albeit with a few more fights tossed in.

I severely hope not. The Islanders are polluted with #5 and #6 guys. The last thing they need is a guy who's more like a #7.

Ekman's injury did him in this season.
