Zherdev/Chistov OR Ovechkin/Malkin/Kovalchuk

Ecstatic with the choice of Cherepenov. Perhaps some of the hesitation with selecting him is the result of the disappointing careers (up to this point) of Zherdev (I believe a #4 pick) and Chistov (a believe a #5 pick).
I'm wondering it anyone who saw them play as underage Russians can compare Cherepenov with Zherdev, Chistov, and the Russians who have made it (Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk)? Not as they are now, but a comparison of how they were as 18 year olds? I've picked up some vibes that many don't feel that Cherepenov is not at the same level of Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk but it would seem to me that he is still developing, still finding himself, and this coming year will determine whether he is indeed on that level.
Again, can anyone compare him at 18 with the other 5 Russians at that age?

I haven't seen him much, so I can't compare with the other players.

But Cherepanov scored more goals than all players you've listed and some you've not (Bure, Samsonov) in their rookie season.

He is not as talented as Malkin, he is not as strong on skates an explosive as Ovechkin, he is not as technically skilled as Kovalchuk, but he is... more intelligent than all big three. Think about 07 play-off Datsuyk (not regular seasons Datsuyk with all his tricks).

Kovalchuk never played in the Super League, he did score a lot in Vyshaya Liga.

I think Malkin and Ovechkin are both especially intelligent hockey players so Cher must be a member of MENSA.

Instead of comparing him to the best of the best, how about comparing him to a guy like Semin?

Also, I don’t understand comparison with Zheredev. They absolutely different players. Zheredev – explosive dangler, and Cherepanov pass-first winger with excellent finishing ability.

At best he is a somewhat slower, but bigger version of Bure. Or a less physical version of Kovulchuk. At worst, he is a thinner, faster version of Brendl. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

Basically, he is a unique player. We have to remember he is only 18 and is only gonna develop into a better player (most likely)
