Pitkanen is 23, not 22. He's already one of the best offensive defensemen in the league. He has the size, sense and skating to make him an asset defensively as well. This is just a bump in the road and he will compete for Norris Trophies in the future.

If a deal were going down between Phi and Det, I'd probably consider Kronwall ~ 35-40% of the deal for Pitkanen. A lot more would have to be added, IMO.

Joni Pitkanen is more advanced offensively than Jay Bouwmeester, but not as advanced defensively. Mostly because Joni broke into the NHL needing to be the offensive guy for Philadelphia and Bouwmeester had to become the shutdown D from day 1. They focused on developing different parts of their game, but I'd put both on the same level as far as skill and potential.

It's probably only take a Kronwall-type deal to lock him up longterm. 4-5 years and 3-4M a season.

If the Wings had a 22 yr old defenseman who was expected to be a #1 D, do you think they'd consider for even a nanosecond trading him?

So.... Pitknanen is really not as good as some of you believe OR he isn't going anywhere.
OR philly cant sign two world class dmen(timonen, pitkänen)

If Kronwall played in the NHL the way he has at every other level of hockey, he should be at least a very good #1 d-man, and possibly a Norris finalist.
being the best defensemen at other levels has nothing to do with being the best in the NHL. he isn't #1 quality, peroid. good defensemen, yes...#1, no.

He has #1 potential. He's not a number one right now. It's ridiculous to think that he doesn't have that potential.

Player wise, for sure I'd do the deal. But if there was a trade I'd want Pitkanen locked in a contract long term. he's a RFA, right?

Pitkanen has a higher ceiling than Kronwall and is less injury prone.

And it makes absolutely no sense to trade a 22... oops... the birthday police are after me.... 23 year old defenseman if you expect him to be a #1 D man. That would be like Calgary trading Phaneuf or the Preds dumping Weber - or the Sens trading Meszaros - because someday they might have to pay them Timonen money.

Under a cap system, a team absolutely has to rely on those younger guys earning below their open market value. No one can afford to pick up high quality UFA's for all the critical positions. If you don't have much in the talent pipeline, you just cannot keep up. See Maple Leafs.
