What the... what did Luoma do to deserve a call-up?

The Oilers probably want to get a look at Luoma this year. The guy is 27 and if he can't play over here, he'll likely go back to Europe. I doubt he would want to stay here all season if he didn't get a shot with the Oil.

That is brutal. Bergeron instils life on the Oilers.

before we all panic, lets remember that the oil are not officially eliminated from the playoffs yet. if we lose the next 5 or 6, then tradesome vets and play the kids. While there is still hope, the focus is on this year, not the future.

I like the fact that they haven't given up yet, unlike me

This really isn't any different than all of you who want Rita called up. Luoma deserves his chance as well, and despite how well Bergeron has been playing the team is still in a large slump. Of course I would rather see Ferguson gone instead, but it isn't going to happen.

I bet its to get him some steady play for a couple of weeks. He sat for a long stretch there. He will be back up soon. Besides getting a look at luoma would not be a bad idea either he can be 7th d-man for a while and let CrapT get a look at him. Does anyone know if Allen is up?

WHAT THE

Our moron coach is at it again.

Mikko Luoma isn't even close to the best defenceman in Toronto, and MAB is at worst the #5 man up here. What a joke...........

If anyone needs proof of how downright STUPID our coach is, this is it.

I agree with the anger towards sending Bergeron down, but Mikko Luoma deserves atleast one chance before he is sent back to Europe, and Bergie is the only guy who can be sent down (other than Semenov).

Hey, you might want to shift your blame elsewhere, as this isn't the coach's decision.

Try directing your anger at the person responsible, not the person you want to be pissed at.

I really hate this idea of sending Bergeron down to the Roadrunners. Sure he makes mistakes defensively but he is much more productive then Ferguson and Cross. Luomo is so darn slow it's not even funny. Him and Ferguson are going to look awfully slow back there.

Lineups are the coaches decision, if he wants a guy to play, he plays. You don't get sent down if the coach says "I want this guy in my lineup".

Precisely.

MacTavish has very little bearing on whom gets sent up or sent down. That is Lowe's job. Lowe is the guy who is sending Bergeron down and Luoma up. I hate MacT too, but this isn't his call.

You are right there, but if a player is going to be sent down, it's not the coach who sends him packing. Lowe is the one who decides who comes up and who goes down, MacT has no control over that.

Unless the GM decides he wants to make a roster move or two.

My 3 favorite Oilers from last year were Comrie, Bergeron and Hemsky. I guess this means Hemsky is next. It's difficult to keep your interest up when the team gets rid of the players you watch.

The interesting question is whose decision was this. Dawgbone thinks it's someone other than the coach but won't name names. One of the rumors regarding MacT's summer signing was that he wanted more control, or was that less interference from above. Maybe it's all part of the bigger, tougher, slower plan.

add: while composing my reply Dawgbone seems to have implicated the GM. I'm still a non-believer

Probably two possible explanations. First of all, as chayos1 mentioned they may just want him to play a few games and get some work in during game situations. They left Semenov to rot awhile early in the season and his played suffered when he came back, perhaps they wanted to avoid that this time.

The other possibility is a trade. If they're contemplating trading Jason Smith, for instance, the Oilers might want another stay at home type they can count on if need be (Cross' wonky back is a possible season long problem).

Or maybe they just don't like Bergeron, but that makes little sense. Despite his rookie mistakes, any fool can see he has some impressive ability.

Maybe they're showcasing Luoma? Not in a trade by himself, but what if a trade is already semi worked out, and Lowe has offered Luoma in the deal, and the other GM wants to see what hes like? Maybe they have been watching him in Toronto but want to get a better look at him i the NHL? I dunno?

playing the card of perhaps a trade is involved is something that maybe all of us want to hope for. I wonder if several players are a doubt over the next few games and they are all the stay at home d-men we have, Luomo would be good as a cover for them.

personally, I want to see Luoma play at least a couple games, and I'd rather see Bergeron than Semenov go down, so I guess this is fine by me if Bergeron was gonna be sitting in the pressbox anyways.

Always nice to find out what you have in a guy like Luoma, at a time when you can shelter him, in case of injury or in case the team keeps on tanking it and then you move Smith.
